OUCH! Generic vs Brand Name Prescriptions

There can be a problem with generics. My wife was on a blood pressure medicine that recently went generic. She developed some side affects (as well as a lower response to the drug) that went away when she went back to the name brand.

I think canadapharmacy.com is a very reputable company. My generic Plavix is made in India. Plavix is made in the UK. So go figure.

'Round here, folks get their drugs the old fashioned way...they grow 'em..

(Just kidding, I couldn't resist.)

Can you comfortably go to your local pharmacist to ask questions about drugs you bought over the internet?

Can your local pharmacist check for drug interactions with your drugs purchased through the internet? Does your internet pharmacist know about other prescriptions that you have filled locally? (Does he/she even care?!)

Will your internet pharmacist open his store for you in an emergency when you forget to reorder your meds...or when your meds get lost in shipment....or when (heaven forbid) there has been a dispensing error on your prescription and you've been sent the wrong drug or strength?

Can you develop a personal, professional relationship with your internet pharmacist?

Will your local pharmacist still be in business when you need him/her?

Food for thought.

Go pharmacists! Some years ago I became responsible for my for my mother who suffers from Dementia/Alzheimer's. She had been living on her own up till then and dealt with her doctor herself. When I viewed the number of drugs,14, that she was taking I became alarmed and called my pal who is a doctor of pharmacy. Turns out she had been taking not only drugs that she no longer needed but also drugs that could interact badly with each other. Armed with this info. I approached her doctor, in a polite manner and asked him why she was taking all these medications. His response was, "Because I am the doctor and you are not!" Needless to say he lost a paying customer that day. I am a simple carpenter and know very little of medicine but am darn glad to have friends in that field. I am all for generics and frugality and the internet, but I now know for sure how important it is to have a personal relationship with your local pharmacist. It's been six years and she is only taking 3 meds. daily at 89 yrs. young. --elrey
