OT - let's talk about car control

swift6 said:
Both drifting and Autocross skills could help with car control in emergency situations on the street because you may be less likely to over-react to the sudden loss of control. However demonstrating your ability to control the car during a loss of traction moment could also see you in traffic court with LEO's who will maintain that you were driving too fast for conditions.

Thats one of the reasons I started autocrossing in 2005. Its saved my butt a dozen of times, mostly to avoid idiots who pull out in front of me. Normally I would just slam on my non abs 1994 brakes and possibly collide with them. But now I am able to swerve and avoid them completely.

Now then, none of this is from reckless driving. At least not from me. I always use cruise control to prevent my lead foot from being too happy. Also another reason I NEVER use my cell phone, ever, while driving. Any slight distraction, or extra mph could have resulted in numerous wrecks just from these idiots alone.

As for intentionally losing control. If youre practicing, of course do it in a safe and legal spot. I would never do it on purpose on public streets, even if I were Rhys Millen.

When I would loose control it was in a 3600lbs 145hp automatic solid rear axle open diff car... ...it was on dry roads, and I was leaving from a stop. To this day I really dont know what happened for sure. I guess I was making a right turn pulling into traffic, and UNLIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD, rather than pull out and coast for a few blocks and have everyone lock up their breaks and wait for me to wake up like they always seem to do with me, I decided to accelerate faster than my car could handle. So, we're talking spinning out at 0-20mph on dry roads in broad daylight with 10.5" tires in the rear.

As far as getting a ticket. If they want you bad enough, they'll ticket you. I havent had a front plate on my mustang in 10 years, yet never gotten pulled over for it. My husband however has been pulled over twice in his car for it. I am the only person in my town that signals, but if I dont signal within 200ft of a turn, I could still get a ticket. Lets see, failure to control speed, failure to make a complete stop, exhibition of speed, racing... ...Depending on how ticked off the cop is, if you chirp your tires while changing gears because youre new to the world of manuals and youre still learning, they can claim youre racing, arrest you and impound your car... ...again, if they wanted you bad enough.
