I was in Barnes and Noble a few days ago, and heard them playing some R&B, the really good stuff, but being covered by someone else.

I made enquiries, and turns out that this is a new album by Seal, entitled "Soul". Now, prior to this, I knew him for being a talented singer and the man who won the fair hand of the fabulous Heidi Klum, but other that "Kiss From a Rose" was the only musical highlight that I had been aware of.

To say that this album knocked my socks off would be an understatement. I love the old R&B stuff, and he really does it justice. It takes a brave man to cover Al Green, but to take on Wilson Pickett??? He covers "I've been loving you too long" faithfully and in the manner that Pickett did the original, because let's face it, you can not improve on that version. Ever.

Otherwise, he puts his own slant on the songs where he can, but doesn't mess any of them up. Rare in this day and age of showing how far up and down the musical scale you can go on "one note" that is prevalent in R&B singing these days.

Did I say that I love this CD? :jester:

If you enjoy good classic R&B as much as I do, you'll love it too.

Review over!!

"Lovin' You Too Long" - Otis Redding, Steve!

But I'll have to check Seal out, as I've enjoyed his other stuff...

If you like the old school stuff you should check out the following records:

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings "100 Days, 100 Nights"

Raphael Saadiq "The Way I See It"

Neither one of these is a covers album, but they'll both make you forget about Seal in about the first thirty seconds, particularly the remarkable Sharon Jones (she's over fifty, but has only released three albums-where's she been hiding all this time!?!?!)

Don't hold it against them, but the Dap-Kings were the backup band for Amy Winehouse. They were the only reason I could stomach listening to her...

No, I completely agree. I wish I could buy Back to Black as an instrumental version only, because I don't like her singing on most of the tracks.

However, she sings the Zutons' "Valerie" on Mark Ronson's album Version, which is worth a download at least.

You JUST discovered SEAL!!!!

18 months ago I was ridiculed on another forum because someone was posting a bunch of pictures of (their words) "Seal and Heidi". After tons of replies and a lot of "oh my God wow, you are so lucky to have seen them, ohhhh" type things I finally asked who they were.

I still wouldn't know either of them if they walked up and slapped me in the face
