Mr. Green Jeans; the little puppet (can't recall his name).

Mr. Moose?

By the way, Paul, according to Wikipedia:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Sport styles by PF were very popular in the 1950s, renowned for helping you "run faster and jump higher." [/QUOTE]

Captain Kangaroo said it.

I believed it, and asked my parents to buy them for me.

We had a big RCA color TV sittin' inna living room BEFORE it was broadcast. Me Ol' Fella had a color bar generator set up and we'd fuss over all the alignment of the guns an' such. When the NBC peacock first spread its feathers we had a HOUSE full of friends and relatives there for the event. Big doin's! It was something to recall, that... now I flip open my cellphone and giggle. Young folk think me to be a lunatic.

Yup! Positively giddy at their naievite.

...'scuse me now, me horse needs shod... :jester:

Doc - was it one of these? Dad brought one home in 1954 (*after* the price dropped from $1000 to around $500). Set it up, did all the fiddling with hue, convergence, focus, linearity, contrast, brightness, etc., then called all the neighbors over.

At 8pm we turned on Your Hit Parade, with Giselle McKenzie and Snookie Lansom. We were totally in a trance, watching that peacock open its feathers, then seeing all the colors of the autumn leaves as Giselle sang ... "Autumn Leaves".

Neighbors were *very* impressed. Then at 9, Dragnet came on. Colors were awful; green sky, purple faces, etc. Dad spent 10 minutes re-adjusting everything, but still no joy. He then called the station, and asked "Why is the color so bad on Dragnet?"

He was silent for a second, then laughed so hard there were tears coming down his cheeks. He turned to everyone in the room and said:

"It's a black and white show."

Memories, memories.

If I'm old enough to remembers some of this stuff, I'm bound to make some mistakes. Heck, I'm happy to be able to remember most of it.

Speaking of Rege, how about when Regis Philbin had a late night TV show?

He was after Jack Parr was retired and Carson ruled the air waves.

And Dick Cavitt?

And John Gary?

OK, western PA guys.

Late Saturday night, Allegheny Theater with the scary monster movies.

Sunday (radio) Polka music from 10:00AM after Mass of course, until 2:00PM, after lunch.

Anybody remember watching:

Zacherley... he was on TV in the 50's and 60's. I watched him as a kid on WPIX in NY

BTW, John Zacherle is still alive...or, ah whatever...east coast thing, as he only appeared in Philly and NYC. I don't think I ever missed watching when he was on. He generally hosted horror movies and did little skits in between after the commercials, and before the started the movie again.

It's good to learn that John Zacherle is still with us. He would never be able to do his schtick today... I remember him dressed as dracula and popping these white round things in his mouth from a bag marked "Moth Balls".... Not today, it would never happen.
Gee, maybe I lost my hair from watching him and eating some moth balls :jester:

OK, just one more....
I used to listen to Jean Shepard every night on WOR radio in New York. His stories about growing up in Indiana and his war stories were just great... I miss listening to him.
I'm sure you all know him right? I bet you do.... Jean Shepard is the author of "Christmas Story" that you probably watch every Christmas.... yes, this is the same guy that was on the radio!

Vacuum tubes in TV, radio and amplifiers. I still have a
RCA Victor am radio with a police band at the far end of the dial. Still works. Nothing beats the warm sound of a good tube amp. I recently sold a MacIntosh amp and could kick myself for doing it. Those things were made to last. Like fridges with the motor on top.
Remember when the local hardware store had a tube tester?
My buddy has an original Austin Healey radio that has tubes with a speaker on the bottom. Still works. He will not part with it. I've tried. Came with his Bugeye.

My brother worked at a Radio Parts Company (RPC) after he got back from the Army in the late 50's. I loved going in and running the tube tester for ladies who would come in on a Saturday with tubes to be checked out. Those RPC and the Lafayette stores were great. They all went out of business in the late 60's.

That's what got me into Amateur (Ham) radio. That and the Boy Scouts, by learning Morse code. Learning to talk to someone across the world over a specific length of wire, through a transceiver with a paddle key fascinated me. Try to get a kid to do that today.

We're all going back and forth across the globe in seconds, sending pictures and responding to each other, through the internet. Which is all really great, until the power goes out or there is a major disaster.

If it comes to that, listen for my: "Dah-dit-dah-dit, dah-dah-dit-dah" Paul!!!!

If it's the big one Doc, it will be, (before the silence):

Dah-dah-dit-dit-dit, Dit-dit-dit-dah-dah.

sweet.... HTML don't read Morse so well. But I appreciate th' "translation".

< ... -- .. .-. -.- >

It's actually harder to 'read' that than the phonetic way!

<dit-dit-dit, dah-dah, dit-dit, dit-dah-dit, dah-dit-dah>

....MUCH better. :jester:

Okay you East coasters. We out here in Sunny California, had Soupy Sales..
