older than dirt

We didn't own a color TV until late '67! Luddite in my genes...

Wow, Bonanza - I remember laying in my bed at boot camp at Parris Island, and I could hear the DIs watching Bonanza in their room - it was like a lifeline back to reality!

77 Sunset Strip, Peter Gunn (for cool) & for comedy relief; Dobie Gillis. I was very much influenced by Maynard G. Krebs!

This reminds me of a little story.
A friend of mine was coming to visit me in our little sleepy community of Pumpkintown.
He stopped at the local gas station located at the blinking light. (business district is how I like to call it).
No one came out to pump gas. He waited. Blew the horn.
No response. The pumps would not turn on yet it was clear the station was open 'cause the door was open.
He ventured inside to find ol Sam Hall sitting there watching TV. Sam was quite the character.
"Can I get some gas?"
"Not till Gomer Pyle USMC is over!" came the terse reply.
My friend sat next to Sam and they watched the last 10 minutes of the show together and laughed their butts off while Sam bid him
to get a free soda from the cooler for the show.
Sam pumped his gas and my friend had a new friend.
The gas station is long gone and so is ol Sam.
I miss 'em both.

Gundy,

Welcome to the Forum.

I had a gas station store that was across from the school that I attended until we went to the Sr. High. Stopped there every day for a 5 cent coke and ended up pumping gas there. That led to a 25 year career working in the new car dealer business after graduation.

At least that gas station did major repairs and I had great teachers to start me out as I pumped gas and learned to clean parts. Not many opportunities today for kids working at the 7-11's.

Anybody remember watching:

Zacherley... he was on TV in the 50's and 60's. I watched him as a kid on WPIX in NY

Soupy Sales

Mr. Wizard

Those were the good times of TV

How about Winky Dink? With the "active screen" that you stuck on the front of the TV and colored in during the show?

BTW, John Zacherle is still alive...or, ah whatever...east coast thing, as he only appeared in Philly and NYC. I don't think I ever missed watching when he was on. He generally hosted horror movies and did little skits in between after the commercials, and before the started the movie again.

We had the plastic screen overlay, three colors. Red, green and blue, I believe. To give you the illusion of color tv.

Remember the ad, "WOW, I GOT COLOR TV!"

How about Winky Dink, where you drew on the screen with a crayon. You were supposed to put an overlay on the screen, but no one ever did.

I did after having my "pants realigned" by my dad for not using one the first time.

Hey east coasters....

How about Captain Kangaroo? Out of KDKA TV in Pittsburgh.

Wow, I remember that, there were five of us kids, just imagine the chaos when Mom got that for us...

Mr. Wizard was a favorite, along with Howdy Doody

I'll bet I didn't miss many of those shows.

Mr. Green Jeans; the little puppet (can't recall his name).

Really a great show. Probably would be considered too "violent" or something today.

Ahh, the memories . . .

There was "Knish and Rodney".

My Dad wouldn't buy a color TV until the moon landing...went out and bought one so he could watch the historic event in color...imagine the shock  when everything from the moon looked black and white :jester: !!! At least the flag was red, white and blue...we all cheered!!!

No-one remembers Gumby?? :frown:

Captain Kangaroo and Mr Rogers were the staples of my youth

along with Mel Blanc

and i remember Gumby

Mel Blanc was my REAL hero.

Him and a KDKA radio personality named Rege Cordic.

About the time of Dave Garroway and that Muggs chimp. :smirk:
