Okay so I went for it…

They require a new boss or hub adapter to fit the splined steering column (i.e. all wheels fit all cars). I have a 13" Grant wheel and it does make it a little easier to get in.
 
The smaller wheel sounds like the ticket. Not only for egress but also to keep my left elbow inside the vehicle as I drive. The nice ones mentioned above will bust my budget for this car.
I did get the top folded down properly, thanks for the help. The top cover / boot, whatever, was in the trunk. It cleaned up pretty good and it is installed. Looks alot nicer.
