What is the recommended sealant for this purpose? I am planning on using hylomar, but before I do I thought I would check with the authorities.

I use Blue Hylomar with good results (provided you have a nice flat surface on the oil pan). I would not use anything that sets up (e.g. RTV sealant) lest a noodle of it squirts inward and finds its way into the oil.

I have best luck gluing the gasket to the pan surface with contact cement, holds it in place during the fitting, & blue Hylomar on the engine pan rail side of the gasket. Ditto on the RTV.
