Oil filter and oil pump?

I am ordering parts for my 64 BJ8 engine. I checked out my oil pump and it is within the clearance specs listed in the manual, .0025 clearance between rotor and body and .002 clearance at the top. Should I still buy a new pump and should I get the standard or upgrade? Is it worth it to buy new internals? Is there a way to check out to see if the pumps puts out enough pressure? Also, what is the best type stock filter to buy, Crosland or some other brand, felt or paper? Thanks and have a good day!

John

Do you recall what your oil pressure was at running speed before you went for the rebuild? If it was 40+ before the re-build you should be OK, especially since the journal tollerances will be tighter now. I'd recommend the spin-on filter upgrade unless you are going for a concours restoration.

john, if your going to replace the pump be carefull about using a repro, dont ask me how i know, one would be much better off finding a n.o.s. replacement i.m.h.o.

Lance,
The car has not run in 15 years, long before I bought it so I don't know what the pressure was. The spin on filter sounds like the way to go.
Anthony7777,
That is exactly what I was worried about. I wonder what my chances are of getting a new pump worse than the one I have. What are the chances of finding a NOS pump? Thanks for the help and have a good day!

John

If it is similar to the 100 pump you can take the bottom plate and smooth it out if there is any wear, I understand that the clearence on the bottom is as critical or moreso than the rotor clearance as far as pressure, of course you have to be sure to sande it perfectly straight and smooth.

john, i purchased a new replacement from a moss type vender and installed it, upon starting the engine it produced 60 p.s.i. for about 15 seconds then locked up snapping the cam driven drive shaft, at that point i did a total rebuild on the engine because it had several other minor issues and it was just time to do so, the n.o.s. pump i found cost $525.00 and was sent from england, took about two weeks to find it, yes it was expensive but i can drive the car with confidence, i agree if your pump spects are within limits id reuse it, my old one was not, i also installed the spin on filter set up, good luck.

I think you can rely on Denis Welch oil pumps. I was disappointed with performance of a new pump I obtained from Moss. It's performance was only slightly better than my old oil pump that had observable wear. The Welch pump was better.
