I ordered more stuff yesterday. This time a rebuild kit for 1 HS6, plus a new damper spring (Yellow - 8oz), and a new float bowl angle spacer. I decided to order my bits from Advanced Performance Technology located in Riverside, CA.

The guy I spoke to on the phone seemed to be relatively knowledgeable about SU carbs. I told him what I needed, and what I am putting it on, and the first thing he asked was whether it came out of a Volvo. From there he told me that I probably don't need to get a new needle, and that it'll more than likely be rich enough, if not too rich. He even knew that the throttle shaft tends to wear out before the holes tend to elongate. While on the phone, he went around their parts bins and made sure they had all the parts I wanted on hand before completing the order. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Later, after I'd gotten home from work, I decided to 'psych myself up' for the job, and tore down my HS6 (thanks Doc!) til it was nothing but a hunk of aluminum. I removed the needle from the piston, and low and behold it is a ZH profile needle! (the profile I need for my application). And the throttle shaft indeed had worn grooves while the holes were in large part still good.

Anyways, I should have the bits today or tomorrow. I think I'm gonna stop off someplace and pick up some liquid Brasso so I can do some hand polishing over the next few days.

me money is on Phil

did they have an accent?

Patrick

Maybe? I didn't catch his name, but he certainly seemed like he knew his stuff.

Accent? hmmm... not one that I could detect.

Dave = Knowledgeable w/ Accent

Phil = Knowledgeable w/o Accent

I reckon it was Phil then?

Either way, he was really helpful.

Both are great guys!

I usually speak to Phil on weekdays and Dave on weekends.

Steve, not to hijack a thread, but are you having them do the head?

Imho It is well worth it.

Their site indicates they do machine work, but - I missed it where they do rebuilds also?

R.

This should be interesting. When I checked the needle, I seem to recall it (ZH) would be appropriate for the MGB app.

No, Sean Brown is doing the head work. APT is doing everything under the head, and then assembling the engine and doing dyno work.

anyone know of a place that can custom fab an aluminum intake manifold?

Just wondering if I should go to my favorite pipe bending shop to have them fab one out of exhaust pipe material, or if I'll fair better at a shop that can do casting.

Okay, Rob... I'm now confuzzled. To fab a cast manifold to mount that carb will likely cost as much as goin' out and buying a DCOE and manifold off'n E-bay!! Certainly as much as finding a twin SU HS4 setup. I thought you intended to use the existing rig.

*sigh* yeah... but at the same time I'd like to try and improve the flow characteristics of the intake manifold... I like the HS6 because it resembles the stock carb from an untrained eye's POV. Plus, it has better flow characteristics than the ZS, or at least that's what I've been reading. Plus, it's easier to modify to make it flow even better.

I guess you answered me question about having a manifold casted... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I suppose I can ping my favorite pipe benders and see what they have to say ...

Either way, I still can't wait to get that puppy rebuilt and hung on the side of my motor.

Ha, someone once said "A pair of SUs and make her sing."
