I've been offered this LAYCOCK OD unit and don't know exactly what I am looking at, what it would take to make use of it, if it looks good / bad / otherwise.

Please help me out. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Without the transmission itself its just a good boat anchor!

If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, it didn't originally come on that gearbox. But it's hard to tell exactly. What it LOOKS like is a D-Type overdrive module adapted to a Morris gearbox. If that's the case, I would be very interested in whatever you don't buy, mainly the intermediate housing (which won't work on an MGB anyway) and maybe the rest.

What is the exposed gear between the OD shaft and the gear box? Looks like something is missing, like a rear case enclosure?

Is that a Volvo trans? I think it might be a J type and Volvo 4 speed. They can be modified to fit TR6s I think....

I believe the OD unit is for a 1962 through 1967. I could be wrong, but with the external solenoid, I don't think it's for a later car. The tranny ???

Re: OD unit - Please look & tell me what it is etc

Steve, I sent you a PM.

Here was the last communication from the seller:

That is a early volvo transmission with a D type Overdrive unit. Even though it is a D type, the only part that is the same as an MGB is the valve body and the solenoid..

The rear housing is a different diameter at the rear bearing, the speedo setup is different ( and the wrong ratio), the output splines are different than an MGB, so you can't put an MGB drive flange on it and the mainshaft going into the OD unit has coarse splines, the MGB has fine, so you can't use the sun wheel assembly etc..

I have used these as parts sources to repair MGB Dtypes, so I have tried every part!!

The later Volvo Overdrives are J type and can be pretty well used for a TR6, but you need the rear drive flange from a TR6, and the rear casing on the Volvo unit doesn't have the mounting tabs for a TR6.. I have also used these as parts for TR6 overdrive repairs...
