nut for pulley on water pump of 100-4 BN1

Hey all,
My 1954 BN1 has not had the original fan blade on for some time
as the previous owner of 30+ years simply used an aux fan
if things got hot. Well, I have gone to put the fan on
and find that the nut that goes on the water pump shaft to
hold the pulley on is apparently thicker than standard.
By that it appears to be about 1/2 inch in thickness versus
I would assume 3/8 or so for a standard one. I have not been
able to find a replacement nut anywhere. If I attach the
fan to the pulley with the correct bolts the extra thickness
of the above nut means I have a small gap to overcome between
the fan blade base and the pulley. Could I use some small
stainless steel washers to close that gap and have the
fan blade tight up against the pulley ? It seems like a good
idea but my only concern would be vibration. Looks like it
would take about 3 washers per hole to make everything fit
flush. What do y'all think ?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, I would source the correct nut. Failure to so could result in the loss of a radiator or as a minimum failure of the pump. You might try British Car Specialties for the nut--Fwiw--Keoke

Hey Keoke,
Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about Norman so will give them a
call. Weird as it seems, the car does not have an over heating problem without
the original fan blade but figured it better to reinstall.
Regards,
Mike

Keoke,

If you can identify the thread I have had good luck with these folks having a wide selection of British Nuts and bolts....

I recently changed mine out for a warmer Climate version. Might be an option for you, this has a hole for the main nut to pass through it and offers a much better cooling.

Michael.

Is this the nut in question? I took my antique alloy prop blade off to ensure I didn;t end up with a hole in the shroud!

Hey zblu,
That's the guilty subject ! When you took the old aluminum fan blade off have
you just left it off with no fan blade ? As I mentioned, the previous owner
of 30+ years took it off and never put back on and did not have over heating
issues. If he was in a parade or something he would turn on the aux electric
fan mounted in front of the radiator which is still there and working. Michael
O'Brien above mentions a hot climate fan which I might look into.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
The pic is of a spare block, it shows a washer behind the nut, I have 2 ali propellors for lack of a better word! sitting on the shelf
I replaced it with a 5 blade unit similar to the texas cooler, (at least from memory its a 5 blade)due to the fact the original is now over 50 years old and may be prone to self destruction!
The car has always been prone to getting hot while sitting in traffic for any length of time, mind you summer over here is 100'F+
Cheers
Ian

Mike,
If you have had no luck, there are a couple of BCF members from the USA that are going to be over here for the AH get together, I could let them take the nut and washer back as excess baggage!, and if for some reason its not right you can post it back
Cheers
