noob car show questions

I just today registered the wife's MGB and my BE for the local
Scottish Games British Car Show. I can virtually guarantee we will NOT win an award but I can also guarantee we WILL have a good time. Heck it was worth the bucks to get good parking.
That and we'll get to cast a ballot for our favorites in over a dozen categories. :cooler:

I actually kind of enjoy seeing the unrestored cars as much as I do the restored ones.

As someone else said, it's inspiring to see the work that people put into saving these old cars from the wrecking yard. A few dents? Well, so what. Maybe someday they'll get fixed. The point is, at least for me, preserving something of a bygone era and being able to live it to some small degree, without worrying too much about the occassional ding or scratch.

That said, I was always the guy that enjoyed the rat bikes much more than the dressers. Anyone can bolt on chrome. I'm much more impressed with the creative use of bungee cords and hose clamps. ;-)

DO NOT worry about your car as long as its clean you will be fine go have a good time I once went to a all British car show in "Mid" Jersey my car is a 74 Midget also far from perfect and I won a 2nd place award much too my surprise its one of my prizes that I thought I would never have won so go have fun and enjoy the day out!

Once I actually washed my Sprite for a car show and may do so again (someday). I go just to see other Spridget (and other car owners) and their cars and enjoy the day!

Just curious, how old are your kids? My son's are about to be 10 & 12. While I've taken them to a few car shows over the years, they really don't care for it. After 30 mins or so they are ready to leave. If you're kids are young, maybe find something else for them to do that day.

Also, for better or worse many owners don't like kids touching or playing around their cars.

So did you go to the show? I've seen pix on other forums, looked like a beautiful day with lots of LBC's!

hey John

I did go, and what a great time I had. The day was PERFECT, and I never have seen so many beautiful cars all in one place. Cars from Lotus 7's, to Big Healeys, MGA's, down to our small Midgets. In total, I hear 395 cars were present.

I was the first Midget to arrive, so I had the end spot, then over the course of the next hour maybe 10 more Midgets appeared. I think '71 was the oldest Midget there. Most the Midgets had been restored to some level, and there were cars of all quality represented.

Where did you see the pictures of the event? I would like to see them, my camera died after taking 1 picture, dead batteries.

I met a lot of great people, all who have the same illness I have, MGs !!!

Joe,

Glad you had a great time! Yeah the weather was perfect. As I said before it's always great to meet others with the same aflicton! lol One of the guys on the MG Experience posted some shots. I was wondering if we could see your car in that line of spridgets. Here's the link... enjoy!

John, thanks for the link, unfortunately the picture of the Midgets was taken at the opposite end of where my car was. Fortunately someone I met at the show did send me a picture from the other end.

A 1974 Midget that was originally like mine (same Teal Blue and Autumn Leaf interior) but was resprayed with Teal Blue paint and the interior replaced with a very light tan interior won my division. Man, does new paint look real nice !!

Just go have fun, and enjoy the people and the cars, you meet alot of nice folks, maybe a few terds, but mostly nice folks. I'd not into shows as for as winning throphies, I'd rather not worry about my car and drive the fire out of it, neverhteless I like to have good looking car, but you'll see what I mean, there are always a few guys that take the show thing way too seriously, and it doesn't look like a alot of fun to me, I rather have good driving experience on the backroads than a truck load of show throphies. Ok with all that being said, you'll enjoy being part of the show, you'll meet alot of cool people and see alot of cool cars.

I had a guy who went on my poker run a few weeks ago tell me he got a stone chip in his front air dam, I couldn't help myslef, I cracked up, and told him to touch it up. I think of show for about 90% of the folks that come it's nothing more than a fun gathering to meet new folks and learn more about the cars, but at the end of the day driving these car is what it is all about, show s are just gatherings to find new driving adventure buddies

Hey who knows, you might meet a new buddy with a flask of single malt  (ok that was a private joke)

Hap,
I have to say, I am with you. The fun is in the driving of these cars. I know I don't have any where near the hp that you have, but there is nothing like driving a near stock 1275 through the back roads of pennsylvania. All you need is a GPS and plenty of time to just get lost.
Several weeks ago I stopped by a local park and they were having a Jaguar show. I do have to say if I had the money I would get an E-Type, and I would drive it. Many of these cars came to the show on the back of trailors. I know some people really showing off their cars, but I have to say I enjoy driving it, seeing people faces when I drive by and seeing little kids get photos in the car. I also enjoy the fellowship with other MG owners on the boards who are not far away when you need a hand.

What was weird, was that in every other division there were the museum quality cars, and they were beautiful. but the Midget division seemed like it was the working class or blue collar division. all the Midgets were drivers, which was nice.

like others who posted on this topic, I let people in my car, lift carpets and poke and prod around. many people loved the fact that the car was still original.

And I was a little upset with you all, my neck and face are as red/burnt as a ripe tomato, sitting in the sun from 10am until 4pm cooked me pretty good. then I went back to see if anyone recommended sunscreen and Tom & John both did, dammit !!! lol

in the end, I will clean my car up some more, and try and win next time. I can still go and meet all the great people and have a great time, while still trying to win!!! why the aversion to some good competition? many posts on this thread stress the fact that they are not there to win, and that sentiment was echoed at the car show ad nauseam. I will compete over everything and anything, or so my wife says !!!

I'm not from CT, so I might not be the one to ask, but some other good regional shows include the Boston Area MG Club's show in Carver Mass. Great show for the family.

And the Cape Cod club also host one in the fall too, but I've not been to that one.

If you ever want to come up to Saratoga, NY my club hosts it's how at the Saratoga Auto Museum on July 23. Hemmings host their Sports & Exotics show at the same local on July 8th.
