Since rebuilding the car it has made an engine noise which is tough to identify.
It is from the front of the engine, and changes with engine speed, not car speed.
I have listened both with a screwdriver and a real stethoscope, and am pretty sure its not valve gear. I did think it was generator bearings, but replacing with a rebuilt generator, no improvement. I sprayed a belt treatment on the belt, no help, pulleys appear evenly shiny. I thought maybe the timing chain tensioner was not working and the chain was thrashing around touching the case, but after listening with the stethoscope I think not.
Finally, I took the belt off and spun the waterpump by the pulley, it seems nice and quiet.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Simon.
