Noise I can't identify

Since rebuilding the car it has made an engine noise which is tough to identify.
It is from the front of the engine, and changes with engine speed, not car speed.
I have listened both with a screwdriver and a real stethoscope, and am pretty sure its not valve gear. I did think it was generator bearings, but replacing with a rebuilt generator, no improvement. I sprayed a belt treatment on the belt, no help, pulleys appear evenly shiny. I thought maybe the timing chain tensioner was not working and the chain was thrashing around touching the case, but after listening with the stethoscope I think not.
Finally, I took the belt off and spun the waterpump by the pulley, it seems nice and quiet.

Any suggestions? Thanks, Simon.

You could try very briefly starting the engine with no belts on; to eliminate the water pump & generator.

I had one like that and it turned out to be the grille rubbing on the body, even changed pitch with rpms.

Also check fan extension rubbing on the rack.

Need more information
what does it sound like, can you describe it? a vibration noise, grinding noise, does the noise sound like half the rpm speed, it would be valve train related, are you sure its comming from the front? I have a 2003 4 runner and kept hearing a poping noise when traveling at 70, I thought it was the brakes, looked at every one, was waxing the car and did the roof and found the cross member on the roof rack was loose, tightened it up and the noise went away
