Not one mention here on the passing of Benny Parsons!! One of the true gentlemen of the nascar persuasion! Thought I would post a short memorium! Reinforcement for those trying to quit the ciggies, he died of lung cancer!!

Too bad about BP. He was one of the nice guys. He said that he had given up the habit 30 years ago. People die of all types of cancer everyday, regardless of their habits. It is non selective and effects us all.
RIP.

There was quite the long thread here about a year ago on NASCAR. Seems the vast majority here consider NASCAR a "4 letter word."

I don't understand that. I have watched it on occassion and think it can be as exciting as any kind of racing, but I'm am from West Virginia.

"Professor" Parsons was one of those old-school racers that seemed like a fun and agreeable character. I did not follow his race career, but I liked him when I saw him announcing NASCAR on ESPN. I hope his loss will get some of you to stop smoking.

As for NASCAR....I enjoy the road-course events at Watkins Glen and Mexico City and look forward to more of these type of events. I've done plenty of laps around The Glen...it's impressive what the NASCAR guys can do there in a fairly primitive 3500 pound car with 800 HP. One of my brothers just rode shotgun in a Busch car at Pocono. He said that 170 MPH is pretty exciting, even in a big tri-oval like Pocono. I'll bet.
I have to admit that the roundy-round races do not hold my interest, but to each, his own!

One of my students runs a NASCAR modified and it seems like a great way to race. I wish the sports car clubs could support their racers and market themselves all well as NASCAR.

I was at the Glen for the first NASCAR race of the "new era". It was a lot of fun and some pretty darned good racing too! Here are some pix!

Nice pictures. I saw my first NASCAR race at Riverside...wow! I too enjoy the road coarses the best, but do find Bristol to be a hoot.
Cheers, David.
PS What is wrong with W.V., Basil? It is the best kept secret in America.

Wow that's a shame. This is the first I am hearing of it. Since they took away Speed, I am out of the racing loop.

They took away your Speed? They moved mine and I'm still getting used to he new channel no. Keep having to hunt for it. Old habits die hard, but I couldn't live without it even though it is getting a bit too NASCARish!

Yeah my local cable company does that for a while then slowly but surely gives us new stations. They are on for a year or so and then POOF! they are gone and they move them to a higher priced package. If ya wan'em ya gatta pay! More stations means more money & time spent watching TV which I do not do a lot of. It conversely means spending more money & time on my cars. (oh and where are the emoticons?)
