Nissan keyless entry system dead?

Wonder if anyone has experienced this.

Tried to start my 2011 Altima this morning. Dead in the water. System doesn't realize the fob is there. No reaction to any of the fob buttons (locks, alarm, etc.). Dash panel has a flickering "security system" icon (silhouette of car with a big key), which is constantly flashing - even when the fob is back in the house. You can even hear a faint "clicking" or buzzing sound in the dash panel which matches the flicker of the security icon. The icon flicker isn't regular - more like a loose wire or failing circuit somewhere.

Tried the back up key. Same non-result.

Tried the recommended "dead fob battery" technique of sticking the fob in the emergency slot under the steering wheel. No change.

Fob batteries test strong. Seems the problem is the car, not the fob.

Car is still under the original 36 month 36K mile warranty - but I can't reach the dealer until Monday morning.

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Thanks.
Tom

I agree with Judy

All shall be revealed: the keyless entry system depends on two things - the battery in the key fob, and the battery in the car.

After troubleshooting all the obvious keyfob issues, I wondered what I could run without the fob. Not much - but you can turn on the headlights.

By golly, the headlights were very dim.

Checked the car battery (OEM only 25 months old). A good and hefty 4 volts.

Jumped the battery, everything back to normal. Drove to AdvanceAuto where they checked the charging system (OK) and the battery (disaster city).

Note that the OEM battery warranty is for 24 months. This is the 25th month. I swear those things have secret built-in timers.

Anyway, new battery and all is well.

Onward through the fog.

From my experience Nissan batteries don't last more then 3 years. 4 Maximas and one Altima.

When I pulled the old battery, I found absolutely no identification, labels, dates, etc. anywhere on the battery. Probably explains the 24 month warranty.
