New Years Traditions... AKA What's for dinner?

Offline
I've been married about 4.5 years now... My family is from far northern West Virginia. My wife's family is from West Central Alabama.

In West Central Alabama it is a customary tradition to eat Black Eyed Peas, greens, and Hog Jowl (uncut bacon with the pork skin still on).

All this for good luck in the new year (traditionally).

In West Virginia, it is customary tradition to eat pork (any pork will do), and sauerkraut (or just cabbage). Well... the wife and I just decided that Hog Jowl is pork... black eyed peas is black eyed peas... and sauerkraut is "greens"... or it once was before it was fermented. hehehehehehehehehe.

What are you having? (or considering my timing... what did you have?)

We had German goulash' - My wife is an incredible cook, besides being incredibly good looking. When we were married 22 years ago, she went to mine Tante's unt Mutti and got the recipes for the great food that I grew up with. I am truely blessed. Great way to start the new year - eh, I think I'll put the boys to bed early tonight /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

We are from central Arkansas and tradition is food, football and family. My husband grilled up about 100 chicken wings, we cooked up a crock pot of black-eyed peas (flavored with ham hocks), fixed up plates of dips, vegetables and chips and put it on the coffee table so we could watch every bowl game and cheer on our piggies (who lost by the way) Family drops by, nap during the boring parts, eat, sleep some more...you get the picture.

I love holiday traditions! Well back to the tostito Fiesta bowl..I think I feel another nap coming on.

Very nice baked/smiker ham with the fixins. Anyone else love ham dipped in Horseradish on the side? (Really helps clear the sinuses).

had pork roast, sour kraut, spinach, and black eye peas.

the "traditional" New Year's dinner I suppose.

Same in Tennessee & Mississippi

I worked out in the barn most of the day and didn't eat until came back in....the kids are home from college...we ordered out for pizza.

I guess Western Pa. (Where my wife is from and where I spent many years)is much like West Virginia, we had some fine pork chops w/kraut, a nice salad for the greens and black-eyed peas too!

Ours ~would've~ been same as yours, Mike (from the same area originally too), but due to the insanity/discomfort of a 'surprise guest' viral invasion, we grilled up a slab of beef and some baked spuds. Green salad and some lovely mixed veggies... Sat sneezin', snifflin', coughin' and glommin' down food which should have tasted wonderful (pro'lly did) but instead, we agreed, tasted mostly like cardboard. <sigh>

*cough*

yuck.

Never had the ham and horseradish but oh man prime rib and horseradish is to die for and the hotter the better

Well, the year can only get better from that begining, Eh Doc?
Get well soon!!

I'll take that under advisement, James!

Meanwhile: I've started a "Virus Killer" pot of Dr Entropy's home-made bean soup!

1/2 pound navy beans
1/2 pound black beans
1 pound ham/ ham hocks
2 onions
2 green peppers
3 BIG stalks celery
3 carrots
1 green bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
1 shredded Idaho spud
1 HABANERO pepper
1 chili pepper
salt. pepper.

Beans soaked 8 hours, rinsed.
all ingredients sliced/diced and dumped inna pot.
Fill to cover all with 1" water over goodies. Bring to boil, then simmer covered for four hours, stirring frequently.

To be eaten with slices of fresh Cuban or Italian bread 'n butter...

It will purge this bug!!! 'course neither one of us will be fit company to be near for a week... <BEFG!>

I'm a fool for PEASANT FOOD!

Love the bean recipe doc. I was thinking bean soup for this weekend. Tonight we're gonna have Beef Tips and gravy with garlic, over steamed rice. Sweet N Sour Rum to wash it down. I've been getting the itchy throat, and these rum drinks have been pretty good at making me not notice it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

That's how this "Virus from Heck" started out. I expect the habanero/chili combo should empty my skull of ANYTHING not well-and-truly belonging in there... If ya don't hear from me in 48 hours send flowers, as me brane's abandon'd ship too! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
