New vs. Repaired Frame

[ QUOTE ]

Yeah I guess so Bruce until you put your hand in your pocket. Cheers-Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And thus the whole idea - keep ones mind off of that fact by pretending something else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Skip!

Moss shows Late BJ8 L/H only rails available at ~$1600.00 while the early car rails are~$647.00 each.-FWIW---Keoke

Continue checking to see if you can "dodge the bullet"and just repair.

I've found the rust to be too great:

All four ouriggers were rotten and two all but gone.

The front crossmember was split from jacking, the rear had a hole rusted through.

With other odd holes and the PO's brazed patches covering unknown ills. About the only chassis component that seemed sound was the central "X" and buying a whole chassis seemed far better than building around so little of the old.

I count myself fortunate too in acquiring a second-hand new chassis. Someone had bought it for a project, then decided to fix their old one instead. Still not cheap but half what it would have cost new. Taking forever on the project allows some economies to be found, I tell myself....

I estimate that the car will be 90% new- I'm replacing all but for the two shrouds and the bonnet, the front and rear bulkheads, a few other patchable inner body bits and the drivetrain.

I wonder if it'll have that new car smell....

Looking at the pictures - new frame for sure.

To all of you with kind words of support, efkadisto, which is Greek for thank you. It sounds like there should be a Greek/American chapter of the AH club. BTW, I tried windex on the rust, but it didn't help (you had to have seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding). I think the name Austin Healey derives from the Greek phrase that means "potential rust bucket".

Well looking at those pics does mine count as being worse?

I am convinced i need a new frame.

Interesting rust pattern - looks like soaking floors and carpets over many years and rusting downwards. Was this a re-import back into the UK ?
