Netflix!

Only if we're fully groan.

I’m totally with you on the DVD service. Massive bummer, because it was almost the only way to get obscure movies.

The problem with streaming services, is that none of them have “all” the movies. For example, I am a huge fan of The Simpsons (don’t hate me 🤪), but this means I have to get Disney+. I’m too cheap to do that; life goes on without the Simpsons

As a family, we will probably end up subscribing to one streaming service for a few months, and then switching. We left cable for Netflix a few decades ago because of the high bill / countless useless channels. I have no desire to go back!

It also means those of us who cannot use streaming services (there is no internet out where I live) are cut off from yet another resource. The above-mentioned $5.00 bin at Wal-Mart is a good source, and sometimes you can find things at places like Half-Price Books.

I'm getting real tired of companies, government and educational institutions just assuming that the internet is universally accessible. I know they want to pretend that it is, but the reality is that there are still large portions of the world that still have little to no access. They either need to require the internet to serve everyone, or require essential services to offer multiple methods of access in order to make those essential services available to those whom the internet has chosen not to provide service to.

Me too. And I can't tell you how many times folks with grey hair ask me what to do with an email from their insurance company, that has a pdf attached, and they need to sign it, and upload it to the company's website.

Seems that "going paperless" is a great boon to the company - but the end user doesn't benefit.

With so many reasonably pr iced streaming services here in the UK DVD's have taken a back seat.
The local charity shops have 100's os DVD'sthat people have donated selling for £1:00 each, and music CD's 4 for a £1:00
I know they are not the latest but i have found some great older movies and music from my era that probably
wont get shown on the steaming sites.

When I visit my sister I get to see what she has on all her streaming services.
Nothing there to interest me AT ALL.
I trimmed my program guide down to about 50 channels that might have something of interest.
Most of the time I scan it to 5 or 10 days ahead and can't find anything worth watching.

Not worth having a recorder here, if you miss something today it will be on a different chanel some other night or repeted on the same chanel a couple of nights later,

I refuse to watch ANYTHING live.
Even the news, and I find commercials insulting.
My hearing is impaired and even with CC I often have to rewind.

I think the major part of what I'm learning, is that the worthwhile things (to me at least) are decreasing, and corporate profits are increasing. And seems to apply to digital experiences in spades.

Think of all the online entertainment being pushed now - and none of it do we really need. Heaven forbid we get bored!

harumph

You're preaching to the choir my friend.

Like every large business those at the top want to drive costs, money going out, as close to zero as possible. Then reward themselves for being such great money managers. How it affects the business long term, they don't care since most don't expect to remain where they are for a career.

In the AM I watch local "news" for weather and traffic reports. No cable, one "subscription" to the Formula-1 site. Herself will watch an Amazon flic now-and-then. The rest of the time the tube is just background noise. We've a pile of those bargain bin DVD's and some automotive themed ones I've ordered. In the last few years my attention has been on adjusting to digital photography after spending the first half of my life as a pro, with film. Much more entertaining than watching TV for me.

Golly - maybe with the writer's strike starting, we could all actually spend leisure time with something called a "book"!
