Wow, cup washers, blast from the past.
The last time I went looking for cup washers was when I was restoring a Robert Morton theatre organ console in 1997. You're probably running into the same problem I did: everybody who says they have cup washers actually just has finishing washers.
After a huge search, the only place which turned up was Schneider Pipe Organs. He kept some on hand for restorations, & had a vendor do a run of them from time to time.

He had brass & some nickel-plate (which looks like chrome).
The black anodized screws holding the center section of late Spitfires & GT6's to the car also originally had black anodized cup washers behind them, although it seems most have lost them & are suffering finish cracks as a result now, or they've been replaced by less-attractive finishing washers.

Trim shops will be able to supply you. You can try BAS of any other supplier in the USA. I know that Woolies in the UK has them.

Yes, that's a cup washer.
And that's an oval-head screw, too!
It seems like only in the last couple of decades that some suppliers have started calling finishing washers cup washers. Probably to attract buyers looking for cup washers who can't find them & decide to capitulate & just buy finishing washers.

ok I get it now: The cup washer is like a finishing washer but without the rounded outside edge. My car is full of the cup washers and I had not noticed because the "cup" washers disappear under the screw, leaving just an "edge" around the screw head!
I think you could take a flat thin washer and press it down to make the "cup" shape between male and female dies, (to make your own). The screws are still available in polished stainless steel.
Here's a lot of 150 #4 screws and 150 #4 Finishing Washers for $35.00 + shipping. Note: those are NOT Cup washers but the seller calls them cup washers. talking about that.

good idea about using inserts, but for some reason, the phillips screws don't look "right" in a vintage Jaguar. Jaguar Cars didn't use phillips screws back then. I guess it's just a personal "taste" thing. A screw is a screw is a screw...and the phillips is so much easier to tighten...

has anyone noticed how ming11 completely dissapeared from this thread? I guess we took it over...maybe he already found them while we were racking our heads and taking pictures!
regardless, for me it's been a learning experience. Cup Washers, Finishing Washers, slot and phillips screws, stainless and chrome.
Talking about chrome: anybody heard of Black Chrome?
do you know what it is? or are we talking "powder coating"?
I need to do the two "torque beams" in the engine compartment of my XJ-6, they are two solid steel bars forming a "V" from the firewall to each fender/wing;
they came painted black gloss from the factory, now the steel is rusting and paint is falling off. I need a permanent coating not to mention sandblasting them. but chrome is too shiny, needs to be black, No POR-15 or powder coat for me. Jet-Hot Coating was too expensive for my taste. Any other alternatives?? (see the attached file if you would).

The braces you want to refinish: sandblast them, coat 'em with epoxy primer and follow with gloss black. That should last a good LOOONG time. When/if it does need re-do, just clean, sand slightly and recoat. It's only a couple'a nuts/bolts to R&R after all.

Hi Exotex has found what you are looking for. I would suggest that the the screws be sourced as stainless steel items. When their heads are polished they shine like chrome, do not tarnish and do not shed their Finish like chrome plated screws under the stress of tools.--Fwiw--Keoke

Stainless is nicer than Chrome, if and when it rusts, you just use a fine sandpaper to polish off the rust, try THAT with chrome. But better still than Stainless Steel, I prefer Nickel. I had old electric guitars from the 1950's where they used Nickel hardware instead of chrome hardware, and nickel parts have a beautiful patina unmatched by stainless. Nickel does not rust, it only tarnishes to a dark gray, easy to polish to a beautiful silver tone.

Only problem is: They are not Chrome but Black Annonized or something like that, and the screws are, you guessed it, Phillips, and worse, it's hard to remove the cup washer from the phillips screw. I've been trying all day but it looks like the cup washer goes IN, but not OUT. Well if you can remove them let me know how. Once out they can be chromed.
