TR6 Need help with a 1969 triumph tr6

When you had the starter off did you check the bearing/bushes for wear.
Did you take it apart to check?..Turning the starter over on the bench is not the best test because it is not under load.
While apart, check to see if there has been any contact between the armature and the field coils.
 
I found the culprit!!! i was messing around with the battery leads when i took the earth lead apart to find a millimeter of black crud on both sides of the copper wire. thanks for the suggestion, i really do appreciate it!
