NEED A QUICK ANSWER...setting drive dog for dizzy

OK, I got the new oil pump in this afternoon and plan on reinstalling the whole sheebang tonight. Now, I had removed the distributor, the distributor base and the slotted drive plate that engages the cam and drives the oil pump on the bottom and couples the drive dog on the dizzy on the top. In other words, my timing is now up for grabs. The Bentley says to set the crank on 4* ATDC (did that) so that the #1 cylinder is in firing position (the cylinder is up to the top of the bore - looking through spark plug hole); then it says to set the cam-engaging geared drive plate so that the offset drive dog slot is offset towards the engine. The illustration shows the slot should be in line pretty much with the two opposing holes in the dizzy base, one of which holds the dizzy down with a bolt off the adjustment plate.

The question is...IS THIS RIGHT (my mind is in a fog right now)? There is no way it will line up perfectly with the two opposing holes in the base, but the one alignment that seems best has the slot in the drive plate more parallel with the engine, which is pretty much what I think I should shoot for.

This will all dictate me getting the timing right so it is important to get it right. Yes, I know I did this before, but right now I am so darn gunshy that I just don't need another meltdown.

If the pump is in place and the engine is in the FIRING position (there are TWO times the crank is in #1 TDC for every hole, y'know) try turning the oil pump drive to approximate the place where the dizzy drive will engage it when it is oriented properly.

...BTW: you're using an electronic iggy IIRC?

Bill, you could always pull the valve cover
off- if you are not certain when the piston
is TDC in the FIRING position. Even know almost
nothing me can now do that one!! LOL

As close as you can to the image in the Bentley. Sounds like your on the right track though. Understandable second guessing yourself, but stop it. Clear your mind and work confidently.

Just watched one the head mechanic at a local LBC shop freak out his lead mechanic with a simple question today in regards to a freshly rebuilt TR3 engine. He asked him if he was sure the rod bolts were tight and torqued. Remember, this is when the engine is already off the stand and being readied for customer pick up. The lead mechanic freaked out so much that he pulled the sump to check. Only to find that everything was fine. The whole time the head mechanic was in the corner snickering. That sort of thing qualifies as a mild practical joke with that head mechanic.

That's kinda sadistic, Shawn! Though I've been in BOTH situations. Best advice is what you've already said: "Clear your mind and work confidently."

AMEN!

We've likely got dozens of parallel "terror in an eyeblink" tales... it'd be fun to sit and natter a bit.

Meanwhile... Where's that DENTIST?!?!
