Nasty Healey

Udo, beautiful job!!....extremely challenging! I look forward to watching your progress.

By the way it was nice meeting you at Bonneville.

To others, I've got Udo's Bilstein shock conversion on my efi Healey....super product and Udo was great to work with on my need to adapt the rear kit to the Cape Int'l radius control arm kit.

Cheers,
Steve

Funny how many of us have Healey's and BMWs.

Mixing up the motors under our roof, I would have though it more likely to mate the Rover/Buick V8 with the Healey or into the back of the Europa (ala GDN) or replacing the 2.0L in the Peerless (ala Warwick), but I always considered our 88 M5-S38 a desirable yet unsocial stable mate.

When the BMW develops small electrical faults, I always blame it in the company it keeps.

I am sure you are aware of Frank Fahey in SD, but you probably don't need to make it any faster, but just in case... https://www.frankfaheymotorsports.com/

Keep us posted on the progress.

I was thinking about this yesterday. I bought my first new BMW four years ago and I just love it. I wish I started sooner. Just a fantastic car.

While no car (or brand) is perfect, the BMWs are pretty impressive.

The black car (99 M Rdstr) was our first, followed nine (9) months later by the gray car (01 M Rdstr). The plan was to sell the black one once the gray car was built and delivered. We failed to follow through on that, so the black one is my daily driver, while the gray car lives a much more sheltered life.

Not long after, my wife turned in her last minivan, in favor of a 2002 X5 4.4 (V8), followed three (3) years later with an 05 X5 4.4. In 2008, she wanted to go back to a smaller vehicle (the X5 having gotten bigger for 06) so we got the 535xi (twin turbo all wheel drive). The 535xi is just an awesome sedan, and handles very well. My biggest problem with it, is I don't realize how fast I'm going! Compared to the sportscars, you're so isolated in comfort, you feel like you're doing 50, when in fact, it's 90!

Great cars.

Thanks to all
Yes, I know about the car from San Juan Capistrano. There are many V8 Healeys out, but more 6L and I like to keep the 6 in Line.
I work with Frank Fahey, he is a good Bilstein customer and we have a close relationship. He is giving me all tuning inputs and tips i ask for.

Thanks and I go now back to work on the "Keiler" again.

I think if I ever built a nasty boy Healey, I would look for a decent straight six engine to put in there. Maybe a Datsun 280Z, Toyota truck or the like. I think it might fit just a bit better, but i havent seen anyone do this.

 What!!!?

There is a fella named "Lambert" who did this many years ago during the period when the classic car was being pinpointed as the smog source here in the US. However for his excellent perception and design he was almost put out of the Healey fold-

Certainly the Datsun in line six engine is a natural for the Healey because they used the Healey to design the Datsun sports cars------Keoke

I agree my ideal Nasty would have a stright six. Maybe a 24 valve Mercedes or even better a TVR Speed Six.

Looks great Udo! Are the Wilwood pedals mounted yet? They look really low in the picture, but maybe they aren't bolted up in the pictures.
What are you going to do for a wiring harness? Is your motor the e36 M3 powerplant? Love those motors. Makes just a little more power than my '73 '02!

One of my bn4's has been powered by a Datsun 240Z engine since the late-70's. The car had been converted by a previous owner. It's been reliable and a great driver, plus I can walk into any Autozone and get just about any drivetrain part I need. It sounds similar to a stock Healey, except when the revs go above 5000 rpm! I swapped in a 280Z 5-speed, which makes double-clutching a thing of the past. Of course, if I ever sold the car, resale would be about half what a stock bn4 would sell for. But a good thing about the Datsun swap is no sheet metal was cut, and the car retains the stock motor mount platforms so converting to stock would be relatively straight forward.

Austin

Bill Johnson in Oklahoma has a 1958 100-6 with a Datsun 280Z engine and 5-speed transmission.
It drives and rides wonderfully. It is as smooth and strong as any new car.

How are you doing Austin?

Yep :iagree: they copied the Healey almost to a"T"---Keoke-- :cowboy:

hi Tim- I'm great- just haven't had time to work on many of my car projects! I'm currently putting tube-shocks and rebuilding the brakes on my 240Z powered bn4. Hopefully I can finish it up and drive it before it hits 100 degrees here. I've also been distracted working on a Datsun 510 I bought last year.
Next time you make it out to AZ, let me know! Did you get your carb swap done yet?

But the cutting and fiddling is the most fun on the whole swap. The pedals are just lying in the foot well, steering column is just strapped in to see where it should go.
This is entertainment for me, and a strait swap tacks only a little work. I like the challenge.
The Motor is a 3.6 M5 with supercharger and all the other stuff.
400 + HP is a must for this build.

For me, the cutting and fiddling is just the payoff for the "Imagineering" that goes into
making the dozens of individual parts and systems that were never meant to go together,
not only go together, but actually WORK together.

Completion is just the "proof of concept" that my (sometimes wild) ideas actually worked.

:savewave:

Well Tim JA JA has a fella named Tom Lucky down there that does all that "Imagineering " for him.--Keoke--

Udo,
Do you keep a photo web site of some sort? I would love to see more photos of your work without you having to post them here.

Here is my 280ZX powered Healey. Swap done 25 years ago as best I can tell. Drivetrain is being rebuilt, car is getting a new color today.
