Name this part...

Can anyone tell me what part is pictured?

To make a long story short, I've had it for a while. When we moved, the relocation company moved the Healey. After I got the car, they said they found this on a small pool of oil. I put it to the side but forgot about it during the chaos of the move. Now I have it out and am trying to figure out where it came from.

It's a cover for the oil pool.
Seriously, it looks like the gear & short transfer cable for a speedometer drive.

I though it had something to do with the speedo cable but wasn't sure. My speedometer works, it's just a little shake (bounces around in 10mph increments).

Might be a sign that the cable is going bad or a lack of lubricant in the cable housing.

Well Brandon, if it bounces around.You might unscrew the cable at the angle drive and make sure there is a small copper washer fitted in side the female cap.---Fwiw-Keoke

However, do we know for sure what the part pictured is and what it belongs to?

Yep, Dave hit the nail on the head, but I would have guessed it came from a volvo.---Keoke

P.S. If that little copper washer is missing it lets the cable end bind in the angle drive socket, also if the angle drive has not been dissembled and cleaned of the old hardened grease that can be a cause too.

When my speedometer started bouncing around I just replaced the inner cable which had a permanent kink in it. Fixed the problem. Couple of years later replaced the housing when it was more convenient. Everything still fine.

Brandon, The part obviously isn't missing from your car or the speedo wouldn't work at all.

Yeah Dave, old cables can cause the speedo lots of problems. On the BJ8 there are two cable lengths available . It is my experience that the longest of the two, irrespective of model application, works the best if you are procuring a new one.---Keoke

I wonder if that part came from another car they moved before mine? They probably just saw the oil leak with that part in it and figured it came from my car.
