Reading the SU pump Adventures I have preferred this solution- https://picasaweb.google.com/112770...MayJune2011endMayJune2013#5618900936475943682
a switch permit the pumps immediate change if required
NOTE: the BIG cylinder was a massive Ford Fuel filter - due my oldest fuel tank, dust remains
If all you have is dust in the tank, the filter should be on the pump outlet. You don't want to cut off flow to the pump. If you have particles larger than dust, a screen is better on the inlet and the filter on the pump outlet.

I've had a screen inside a thick glass fuel filter on my pump inlet so I could see if there was any buildup. Since I don't see any, it's being removed.
