a transil is that it is completely non-sensitive to battery polarity. Hence a transil can be fitted either way around and a transil pump can be fitted to any car. It can also be left undisturbed if the polarity of the car’s battery is changed at a later date.

If all you have is dust in the tank, the filter should be on the pump outlet. You don't want to cut off flow to the pump. If you have particles larger than dust, a screen is better on the inlet and the filter on the pump outlet.

I've had a screen inside a thick glass fuel filter on my pump inlet so I could see if there was any buildup. Since I don't see any, it's being removed.
