Sammy,
Sorry to hear the news... I'll share one of horror stories with you...
When the Miata LE (the one pictured in my avatar) was two weeks out of the showroom at Speedway Mazda, I took a trip to Florida. My first stop in Orlando, before heading to Disney's Grand Floridian was at a drug store to get some shaving supplies, etc... Two ditzy (not to be mean, just being honest) teen girls got into a new Camry three or four rows ahead of me in the lot. They proceeded to back straight into the glossy black nose of my brand new car... mind you three parking rows, without so much as turning the steering wheel. It was like I had a magnet pulling them into me.
I got their info and their "oh, my, how could this happens" and sent them on their way. At this point the car had about 1000 miles. Back in Indiana, State Farm ran the info, Dr. So and So in Pennsylvania, the father, and determined that he didn't exist. It fell to my insurance to pay the repair. Speedway Mazda did a beautiful job repairing the damage and I was happy again, and out $500.00 for the deductible due to a poor title/ DMV search on the part of State Farm, I assume.
About six months later, at about 2000 miles, I heard a knock at the door late one evening. A voice said that my pretty car was about to take the brunt of an eviction I had filed on a friend of the person at the door. I went for the phone and as I was dialing the police, I heard the most horrible scraping and crunching I had ever heard (because I knew what was happening I think) coming from my driveway. I immediately slammed down the phone and ran outside in my robe to see the entire driver door, front fender and a bit of the rear nearly caved in from a pair of steel-toed boots, apparently worn by the town psychotic with some axe to grind on behalf of a friend /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif ...... the car was trashed!
Again, State Farm to the rescue...... They felt that body filler would cure the damage, no new door skin needed, etc.
From that point on, I had a gorgeous black Miata that looked like a spray-painted rippled potato chip on one side. I never bothered to pay to have the new door metal put in, the body shop fought hard to convince the insurance company it was needed to make the car look right, but neither they nor I would budge a penny. So it stayed that way until I sold the car.
There are much worse heartbreaks in life, but we "car nuts" take things like this so much harder than most. Many people don't understand your pain, but I think most of us in the forum have been there a time or two. Glad your daughter is smiling and making it all better!
