My bluff has been called!

Before putting the rubber-bumper Midget away for the winter, I threw a quick ad up on our local craigslist - 'MG Midget, approximate value $5500, interesting trades wanted.'

I wasn't actually looking to sell, but there are a few cars I'd probably rather have; BMW 3.0 CS, earlier MG, TR3 project, etc.

And now someone has come along and offered me a low-milage 1999.5 Infiniti QX4, straight up. Owner suggests the value is about $8k, my research suggests more like $6500-7000. Certainly more than your average (or above-average) 1500 Midget.

I'm torn. I really like the Midget... I've finally got it into a very drivable state. It's relatively rust-free, the paint & interior are good for a driver. I love the canvas top. The engine's working very nicely, no big problems. It needs the toe-in adjusting, and probably some reconditioned front shocks, but that's about it.

Thoughts? Should I be taking the deal, then selling the QX and looking for a new MG? Can I actually step into a nice, *rot-free* chrome 1275 car for $6000 or thereabouts?

Eeesh... Opinions welcomed.

The QX is a year round drive in your part of the world. Go for the trade then find yourself a Spridget project to work on.

When I was Midget shopping this past spring I could have gotten a decent CB for under 5K, in my area at least.

One advantage to the QX4 is that you can drive south to pick up a rust free example - certainly you have experience now

I owned a QX4 for a couple years and loved it! Based on the proven Pathfinder platform it was mechanically excellent. The more plush interior was oh so comfortable. I got around 21-22 MPG on the highway. A great vehicle that I would still own if the towing capacity was higher. It is rated at 5,000 lbs and my Pace enclosed trailer and MG Midget run closer to 6,000...and I like a little margin on something so critical. I upgraded my towing capacity by trading the Infinity for a Nissan Titan (9,400 cap.). A good move, for safe towing, but I sure do miss the comfort of the QX4.

valve cover gaskets and front cover seals harden(some of them just orings on the front cover) labor intensive cost to replace the front cover seals..... So get it on a lift to check for any leakage or leak trails...before purchasing, or trading.

Uh-oh!! I made the mistake of mentioning this to the girlfriend... She doesn't seem to mind the idea of having a nice SUV for the winter. I'm going to have to tread carefully here, or I'll end up with no MG at all!!

I'd be sure and run a carfax on it just to be sure. I agree, make the trade, sell the car and start a new project. I got $5500 for my RB 1500 and to be honest that's about $1000 more than I expected. If you can trade and actually get $6000 out of the other car I'd do it, but I'd run a check on the VIN first to be sure its from your area and hasn't been in any of the aformentioned areas of late....

should still need the Ontario Govt car selling kit right?

Yup, pretty sure it's a local vehicle... not much flooding etc. up here... but it would be worth checking. My local Infiniti Nissan dealer does PPIs (pre-purchase inspections) for $89, I'd probably spend the money and be sure.

Just sent an email... we'll see if it comes through. If it does, and if anyone's got a nice CB car to sell, I'll have money burning a hole in my pocket!

There was a *stunning* Volvo P1800E on eBay today, good thing I didn't have money in hand then, or I would have been VERY sorely tempted.

Now if it all happened quick enough, I could snap up this one, which is a carbon copy of my very first car (except that mine didn't run, or have any floorboards.)

WOW! $4000 Loonies (Forex speak for Canadian dollar) seems like a good deal for a complete and driving TR6. You can barely buy a rust bucket for that down here.

Very nice! Although I've never really been drawn to the TR6. I'd LOVE a TR2/3, and don't mind the 4 or 250. But I just can't get into the 6, 7 or 8.

Haven't heard back from the SUV owner, so who knows.

Very nice!! Looks like a repaint, you'd want to have a good look & feel at what lurks under the paint. But you can't knock a nice little RWA.

I know where that picture is taken and would say it is not a scam.

Cheers

Mark
