<span style="color: #660000">BLUUUUFF! Paul.........

We are getting drenched and blown sideways with storm after
storm. Most do not make it to American evening newscasts.

Git yer car in the street and forget about paint until
cold weather sets in. I've got almost 300 miles drive time,
year-to-date. Still broken down now and on jackstands but
hoping to be in the street again by mid-October or early
November. I am hoping to clock 500 miles driven this year
before Christmas.

Dale, it's hard to drive with a smashed in headlamp, parking lights and a hood that won't stay shut because it's riding on top of the cowl panel.

If you look at the other post, the fenders, hood and front panel are all off and the frame is being checked as we speak.

There is no turning back now. In a few weeks we'll be cruising the back roads of NE chasing leaves and feeling the autumn chill in the air.

On jackstands, zero miles driven on these new .025 gapped
plugs.

Such is the Crypt Car !!

Well, if you never stopped getting choked and were never taken out for fresh air, you wouldn't look too good either!!!

Hi Dale,

I just can`t believe or understand how so much carbon can build up on "ZERO MILES DRIVEN PLUGS"??

How long was the engine running with these plugs shown? A couple of seconds, minutes or hours?

The reason why I ask; I`m going to definitely find out what could cause that for you; I hope?

Regards,

Russ

Don't you think that you're being a little harsh on ole Crypty?

Russ- two warm-ups to temperature: including
a 40 foot drive to turn the car 180* to work
on it. One warm up to begin setting timing.
Maybe ten minutes max running time. I usually
need no choke here in the warm tropics. The black,
sooty plugs are without choke.

The engine fires instantly on first crank.
The front carb piston never moves up or down.
The rear carb piston works very well.

Then it looks like you have a front carb problem. How is that diaphragm and spring?

Also, do you have an adjustable mixture on that carb? It could be dead rich.

But then why, after being rebuilt running so well earlier this year?

Did you have the top of the carb off? Is the needle mispositioned or bent and possibly stuck in there, causing a bind in the piston movement?

In the current Classic Motorsports, there's an article about a Jaime Del Valle, who owns Jaguar of Puerto Rico. He also owns a '57 XK150; his guys at the shop did a lot of the work on that beautiful car. Dale, maybe you should drop by and find out who the resident Brit car gurus are......

Dale: This is one time you'd rather not be rich, eh?

Is running rich better than running poor? If it were running poor,
would it be appropriate to say, rather, it is running poorly?
Rich or poor, either way, it sucks. Sorry Dale, but it could be there
is something....f-i-s-h-y....with that carb?

Yeah. E-mail the pics of the latest catch, okay?

Gotta love these cars,

Hi Dale,

I spoke to my "Guru Brit Car Mechanic" yesterday about your "Situation" (Trying to be positive here).

He is the "Best of the Best" @ least here in NE PA. He has been working on my cars for over 100yrs. & never has missed a beat.

Anyways, Your running "WAY, WAY, WAY TOO RICH". Obviously, You had mentioned that the piston in the front carb is not moving. Well, Guess what Dale? "Thats your Problem"!

Who "Re-Built" the carbs the last time? It does`nt matter cause they did a poor job.

Check out "Joe Curto" in NY. He`s been re-building carbs for years and years. He is the "Best of the Best"!

www.joecurto.com / Ph:(718)762-7878 / Fax: (718)762-6287

I would`nt just send him the one carb but send him both with the linkage and all. From some of the other pics of your shaft alignment; That did`nt really look to good either.

You should be on the road in a couple of wks!!!!!

Regards, Russ

PS: There is "No Charge" for this diagnostic from my Brit Mechanic.

Dale,
I remember your original symptoms sounded as though the car was running too rich. When you broke down and then when you were testing the car in the garage it sounded as though your choke was stuck. You don't use choke, so your carbs were running way too rich.
Then we saw those pictures of your linkage with the twist in it. It looked to me as thought one of your throttle spindles didn't want to turn.
Your car is starting and running - sounds as though the electrical side of things is OK. Your car will like to be rich when it first starts. It will not like being rich as it warms up.
Your plugs point to the car being too rich.
If you say that one of the pistons will not rise, then there is obviously a problem with the carbs. You will need to have that carb taken appart and checked for why that piston is not rising. You may find that the spindle is not turning, which would mean that the piston would not rise.
Problem storted ... !! :smirk:
Nick

<span style="font-style: italic">"The front carb piston never moves up or down."</span>

I agree with Nick that whatever is going on with the front carb, the back carb is compensating for the front. Regardless of whether this is due to a stuck piston, binding linkage, or non-centered jet... the carbs definitely need sorting whether you do this yourself or send them off for service.

Dale-

Hang in there with the storms.

With all due respect (and I sincerely mean this), I've stopped reading the Crypt car threads.
No car on earth can possibly have so many problems.

So what?

Dale, you need to get Amos on the road and drive the liguid waste out of him. This is nothing but carbon, which is indicative of a car that is driven for short distances and really doesn't have a chance to reach sustained operating temperature. As soon as you have the new tank sorted out, go out and make him run like a skalded dog.

BTW, is your choke completely dis-engaged when the choke knob is pushed in(off position)? You may think it is closed but it may be partially open!
