Yeah, not exactly the most exciting topic, eh?

During my month long trip across the USA, I stayed in some motels along the route.

Holiday Inn, Comfort, Red Roof, Super 8, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn, etc.

Every one offered "hot breakfast included".

And each and every one had exactly the same hot breakfast choices: waffles, pastries, coffees, teas, cocoa, oatmeal, fruits, eggs and sausage. The egg choices were always powdered eggs (scrambled or omelets); sausage was always a meat/soy concoction.

From East coast to West coast - every breakfast in those motels was exactly the same.

I know those motels are owned by two different corporations: Choice and Intercontinental.

But all the breakfasts exactly the same? all from the same "central warehouse"?

Same here!

They all use the same "waffle mix" - add water and pour into the big canister near the waffle iron.

Lots of people seem "waffle maker challenged" - don't read the instructions, batter leaks out all over the table, don't flip griddle over to start the timer, etc.

But the end product ...

We do a lot of road trips (for racing). I've noticed the "chains" as you've listed above are all similar.
Some of the smaller, self-owned places we go to offer no breakfast....not really a big surprise.

But we've noticed the "high end" motels charge for breakfast. And it's usually not any better than places like Hampton Inn.

We like Red Roof, Super 8, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn and have stayed in all of those in 2013.

Our record for breakfast cost was in Hawaii last February.
Stayed at the Royal Hawiian and assumed breakfast was included.
I had eggs, toast and tea. She had a bagel and tea. We got a $65 bill for that.

After that, we went to the 1-2-3 Store for breakfast (a local, Hawaiian convienece store).
 
that's why I like the Embassy and others that do a breakfast bar where they cook for you
 
We've stayed in some of those same hotels and eaten those same pancakes. My kids loved them so much we ended up buying one of the flip-style waffle makers. It was one of the best purchases we've ever made.

But of course, Tom you already know that!
 
I usually grab some yogurt, apple or banana, some coffee and hit the road. What I have seen and do not like is adults and progeny showing up in the dining area wearing PJ's and barefoot.

No different from seeing their front desks use the same brand of computers or their housekeepers using the same vacuum cleaners.

They're in the same business in the same environment. They have the same vendors to choose from. If "Megaindustrialfoodcorp"'s "chain hotel breakfast clone kit is easily available and provides adequate performance at an attractive pricepoint, they'll sell like Kalashnikov's to third world despot states.

It is included with the night stay
You just pay a little more for the room.
I also like the daily happy hour too.
My wife can bring her computer and work while we enjoy a beverage

The Hampton in we stayed at in Champaign had a breakfast bar with a cook
 
A little more, Champaign this Wednesday 2 Adults, 2 Queen Beds:

Hampton Inn: $159
Super 8: $59.49

Can't deny there is a difference, on business I used to stay in nicer hotels, that was the culture. On my dime, in most cases like an extended trip such as Toms, not worth it to me.

Actually we paid 95 for 3 adults
And it was when all the students were moving in and they don't discount then.
It would have to be the only inn in town for me to stay at a Super 8 :eagerness:
