more about the rocker shaft

When I disassembled the rocker shaft assy. I found that the rocker shaft was worn. I am going to replace the rocker shaft and was wondering if any on is using the Nylatron spacers from Moss instead of the side load springs. I am considering replacing the rocker arms also.

I thought I saw a reference about a vendor for the rocker shaft assy. That may be the best way to go if not too expensive.

Thanks again, Pete

I sent mine to:
Rocker Arm Specialist

Came back looking like new, cost was about what the individual components would have cost me if I had done it myself (shaft, 16 bushings, 8 adjusters, etc.). I still don't know if they replaced the rockers or just reconditioned mine, but they even had a light copper colored coating on them to prevent rust. The pedestals and end caps were the only components that were clearly my old ones.

I stuck with springs as they seem entirely adequate to me, and I have heard of problems caused by using spacers.

I also used Rocker Arm Specialists and was very happy with their work and quick turn around.

I have the solid spacers on my car. I can't say that there was much if any difference between the two since the new shaft and rockers were installed at the same time. I now have little valve clatter as TR6 clatter goes.

You sure they do anything else but sell 4 styles of Roller Rockers

<sigh>
Yes, and I've even complained to them about the gosh-awful web site design. Same old story, they hired a contractor to do the site design and he is no longer available.

They probably would rather sell you a set of rollers, since there is more profit for them. But they do recondition stock rockers and rocker assemblies, and I was quite happy with the result.

One caveat : one of my rocker shafts (I sent them two to cut shipping costs per unit) came back with one of the rockers installed backwards. Easy enough to fix, so I didn't complain, but worth mentioning I guess.

Also, when I moved that rocker assembly to the 56, I noticed that the pin for the rear cap was working it's way out, so I replaced it with a new pin. It may be that the holes in the cap are waddled out oversize and I'll need to ream the shaft to match (so the pin will fit tightly in both).

I sent my TR3 assembly to the same place. I also sent them a set of spacers and springs and asked them to install what they thought was best. They installed the spacers. It cost $140 plus shipping and it does look like new.

I'm in the middle of a rebuild on my MK III GT6 engine at present, and know that I am going to replace the rocker shaft, as its worn at almost each pedestal location. How do you determine if the pedestals are also in need of replacement, or is it the shaft itself that is designed to wear and the openings in the pedestals remain useable?

I don't have my books handy, but as I recall the GT6 rocker shaft works the same as the TR2-6 do. Which means there is supposed to be a screw that locks the shaft to one pedestal (which prevents it moving against all of them) and the rockers turn on the shaft. So you should see the shaft worn at each rocker location rather than at each pedestal. If somehow the shaft has come loose and been working against the pedestals, then you probably do need to replace the pedestals as well. (A good machine shop could repair them, of course, but it's probably easier and cheaper to just source a used assembly with good pedestals and the locking screw.)

the screw that you mention which holds the shaft in place was there, so most likely the wear areas I mentioned were in the shaft areas that held the rockers, not the pedestals.

Are these guys still in business? I sent them an email and did not get a reply.

I tried both numbers. The 530 number is disconnected and the toll free number always rings busy.

My bad!!! I must have dialed wrong. I just talked to them and they are sending one they have on the shelf.
