Molly's Big Day

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for Molly "B". She is going to get her gas tank pulled and steam cleaned. Molly has had several big days lately, I've cleaned and rebuilt her carb, adjusted her valves, changed her fluids and filters, gave her new plugs and she is currently awaiting exhaust hangers and a K&N air filter all courtesy of our friend Tony.

Why is this a big day for Molly? It's a big day because it puts her one step closer to that first road trip. Wish us luck. Oh, by the way, pics will be posted. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

All Molly's new pieces & parts left Moss' New Jersey warehouse today...I should have them by Thurs - you by Sat!

Thanks Tony. Ahh yes, that first trip is getting closer, making all that lost blood and skin worth while. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Blood and skin, thought it was more like sweat and tears?

Sorry, Blood an skin off the knuckles, sweat and tears from the face. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Ok, Molly has had a really big day. The gas trank removal went without a hitch. Dropped it out quickly and took it to the radiator shop. This was a good thing because there was a lot of rust in there and a pin sized hole. Guy at the shop says they should be able to fix it without any problem.

Next project was to pull the rear wheels and inspect the brakes. Just as I thought leaky wheel cylinders and shot Brake shoes so I'll be replacing all these items next. Question: Should I go ahead and replace my rubber flex lines at this point? If so should I replace with rubber or Braided stainless?

Front brakes are tomorrows project along with a call to the radiator shop to make sure the tank is repairable. Wish me luck!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

I'd definitely replace all the flex lines when I redid the brakes, were it me...rubber or braided is a personal call.

agreed. A further comment: the brakes have NO clue if it's wire braided on the outside or not. Go with the rubber. Unless you just MUST have "bling".

Alright rubber lines it is. I'm just not a bling kind of guy. How about some recommendations on brake fluid. Dot 3 or dot 4?

I use plain old Castrol brake fluid!

Castrol LMA here. Fluid change once a year and a decade from the SAME components.

...but that's just ME.

I used Valvoline's version of Castrol LMA... But my local stores just picked up LMA, and as soon as get around to fluching my fluids this year... Castrol is my 1st choice!

Molly gets her front wheels pulled today. I'm going to do an up close and personal inspection of her front brakes. I need to get another list together for Tony. If the calipers look alright should I make plans to overhaul anyway or use as is? What kind of paint should I use to paint my calipers? I kind of like the way that looks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

It is not really if they look ok. It is do they look like they will last another year or so without problems.

As for paint, think I would go the one of your local sorces and get some caliper paint, should have lots of colors etc.

Just got through pulling the wheels and I think for safety's sake I'll just go ahead and rebuild the calipers. I Think it would be false economy not to just go ahead and do it. Suspension bushings look pretty rough but I'm going to save that project for this winter. I'd like to get a little road time in this fall. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Hey Tony, brace yourself. I got a new parts list about put together. I've already scraped the hide off my knuckles and dirtied my finger nails. I'd forgotten how much fun this was. Gas tank should be done tomorrow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

I'll be waiting, John!

I warned you Tony. The list is coming at ya!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Gas tank is done alright. Its a done total loss. To far gone to do anything with. Always something. However I am not easily discouraged. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

There are good used tanks out there - or you can go new.
