Mild 'groaning' on clutch depression...

I heard an odd mild 'groaning' sound, that may be clutch-related and wondered if anyone had any insight.

Shifting up and down is normal, except that the clutch is now engaging quite high in the pedal. It's been apparent for some time that I have to replace the clutch soon. Hoping that it will last the season, I've been driving regularly, with no issues except for the sound I heard last night. The sound does not occur shifting up or down - the master and slave clutch cylinders are making no noise. However, at speed, when I depress the clutch and allow the car to coast in anticipation of a stoplight, I get a mild groaning sound coming from the general vicinity of the gearbox. With the engine off and the car stationary, I can shift up and down through the gears with no noise apparent.

Has anyone else encountered this before? Is it just the clutch in its final death throes?

My first guess would be the throw-out bearing or possibly the input shaft bushing.

The change in position of the pedal might be deterioration of the slave hose. You'd be replacing that anyway if you go for a new cluth in the future. Bob

+1.

I feel your pain - I've just ordered a bearing for my old Benz which has gone past the groaning/slushing sound, and is now starting to squeal :-0

High time for a replacement. Hoping it wont be too complicated :-/

Almost certainly the throwout bearing. At the end of the season get some friends round to help you remove the box and then replace the bearing and the clutch.

Yes that's right the release bearing. Sorry about that, some people refer to it as the throw-out bearing. If it needs replacing you will definitely hear that grinding noise when you depress the clutch. When the gearbox is out it makes sense to check everything including the clutch and the synchros.

Don't forget the input shaft bushing. It's buried in the flywheel and is easy to neglect (also can be hard to get out!).
