MGB MGB windscreen frame question

I had cracked glass in my B and swapped my frame with another with a good piece of glass. I can't push the frame down far enough to get the frame screws in. Any suggestions?
Rick

All frames are indetical from 1962 through 1980. Is the seal correct on the "new" frame? It is also possible that your old seal was worn and flat, so the new seal may just require more pushing. Also be sure the "flap" is not folded under on the new frame.

beats my thought of 'get a bigger hammer' ... I didn't wanna be the first person to pipe in on this thread concidering I had suggestions that get the job done properly....

however, now that i think about it.... a bigger hammer might actually get the job done... assuming you don't break the glass with it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It really is a two man job, the seal is a booger to flatten while trying to maneuver the pillars. Two pieces of stout cord under the seal, from ends to center. Cross them in an "X" in the middle and as the unit is "smushed" pull the ends of the cords from the middle to bring the flap out to it's flat position... all a PITA, and as the unit is pushed down at the ends there is the pillar seal to fiddle with. I've found that LOOSELY inserting the center bolts after getting the middle part of the seal "out" can help keep things in hand. Inserting the bottom bolts in the pillars first is another aid. The center screw at each side (loosened) is the "tool" to move the spacer to align it with the pillar holes. All in all a frustrating job. I'd rather do a clutch replacement or two.

I use wood screws in place of the original machine screws...yep, wood screws...tapered ones...take your screw down tothe hardware store & get wood screws...they'll rethread themselves to fit the threads in the windshield...& because they're tapered, they'll pull the windshield down...then after its on the car, if you want, you can replace them with the correct ones.

Steve, you are right about the frames being the same on all the "B"s but for one thing. The mounting brackets for the sun visors are at a different angle on the later models. I bought new sun visors and they came with the late model mounts. I had to get a pair of good ones from an old windshield to match, as my mounts were worn out. You guys have SUN VISORS?!?!

Wow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Well Doc, I'd rather use sun visors, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif (the sunny south you know), than ear muffs. Ha. Boy, it makes me shiver just to think of it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

heh. Very Modern.

I hadn't even thought about sun visors. My car is a MK I so it doesn't have them. Mainly I was referring to the shape and mounting of the windshield.

eh... the sun visors... while they do have some limited use, I find a ball cap to be a much better solution to keeping the sun out of the ocular cavities... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I do use my sunvisors. For that brief moment in time that they actually are effective in blocking the sun. I have 2 ballcaps, but dude, they cause really bad hair days!

eh... you could also go with scarves, sun hats, and a wind blocker.... I can't imagine hat head being any worse than the tangled mess people with long hair would have from driving with the top down.

hair.... hmmm... I dimly recall "hair"...

Mine was shot off inna Viet Nam war.

...least that's what I tell all th' kids. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Doc, that's roll down funny.

Knew several guys in Nam that lost there hair in days, but it grew back.

I don't think Doc's is coming back - hehehe

Likely not... I been waitin' around for it a looong time now.

maybe you just out ran your hair with driving all those Lotus cars over the years.... prolly take a few more years for all of it to catch back up... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It likely atrophed without a 'host' this long. Oh well, easy come, easy go.

Other "tale" is I've had a transplant: moved it from the top down to my lower jaw. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif
