MGB MGB transmision

I just freed up a stiff shifting tranny by changing the oil and getting rid of the 90 weight the DPO had in it. If the stiff shifting is accompanied by a grinding noise it probably is the synchro, 3rd gear seems to be the most common. Sounds like it is time to visit Tony

Sam Chandler had the same problem, but it was the clutch!! It only happened in 3rd gear!!! I believe it was his slave or master!! Maybe it was the hose, but anyway, you could contact Sam @ SChand8495@aol.com

I changed my transmission oil to 20-50 over the winter (I don;t know what was in it, but is was rather thin) and am amazed at how well she shifts now...I would try that first. And while you are at it, check the slave and make sure it is working right...a little air in the clutch sysytem will make the long shift into third be a little rough if the clutch gives a little.

Start with oil-the easiest thing to change, and maybe see if there's anything odd about the shift linkage. You'll have to crawl under the car for that, of course. Dad's car is very smooth into all the gears, they just glide on in (unlike the Miata, which has a built in "notch" to it).

Nope!! Castrol 20/50!!! I really don't think you want synthetic in a transmission!! It is tooooooooo slippery and the synchro's won't work!

I hadn't heard anything about sythentics causing problems with the synchros - but if you have an overdrive transmission absolutely stick with the most basic lubricant you can (20w50), the wet-clutch arrangement that makes up the heart of the OD can slip badly with any additives or synthetic lubricants.

20w50 is the normally recommended lubricant (although there has been some debate about using 90w gear oil, in fact the factory apparently did ship cars with that lubricant), but the late-model owner's manual lists the different engine oils to use and later specifies that the gearbox oil should be the same oil as used in the engine.
