I'm thinking that too - but I just can't figure out what MGB they were on...I only use the larger bore GT wheel cylinders on all my cars, GT & roadster, & have not seen this before...think I need to take a couple of photos tomorrow.
Look closely, Kenny at the 3 wheel cylinder holes in the center bottom of each plate...the tiniest hole is in a different place relative to the others (not different side - different location)
Yup. Locator hole for the roll pin in the wheel cylinder... all mine here are the "offset" ones. Weird. Would it be from a GT afterthey went to the 7/8" bore? That's ALL I can think of (as different).
I'm thinking pre-7/8 since I put 7/8 on everything...think I'll just relocate it...I mena, what's another littl hole gonna do with all the others I'm going to put in it?
Got one of the backing plates down to less than a pound - & it looks real weird bolted up under the car...I'll get a photo tomorrow...oh, got the wheel cylinder locating holes relocated.
Ah... I see the hole now. Took a few looks. I was too busy at work today to spend much time on it. Yeah, I say dril a 'nother where it's supposed to be.
Can't wait for the pics... I notice you had circles drawn where I showed you the big one's in my suggestion.
I see some freehand ~angles~ too! Ya want to NOT have anything other than radii on that plate, man. Stress risers, y'know.
While I think about it: Be conservative around the pivot points (cylinder and adjuster) as the forces on that part of the plate can tend to be non-linear as the shoes first apply resistance to the drums. Short version: The thing can buckle under even moderate braking.
You DO have spares ("unlightened" ones) ready and waiting, right?
I wondered about cutting the triangles but did it anyway - I'll keep an eye on them...yep, am cleaning up & building a set of 'non-mods' so all I have to do is pull the hub & swap entire brake assemblies.
