MGA MGA Colors & VIN

I'd vote to go with the blue on your car, Tony. I'm not a real stickler for originality, but on a rare car like yours it's a plus. That blue is a really nice color, and will stand out amongst the red and white cars you see around.

In the end do what works for you, of course. But me, I'd go with the blue.

MGA coupes aren't THAT rare. There are probably thousands of them still out there.

Paint it whatever color you like. unless someone checks the car number against a chart, no one will ever have a clue what color it was when it came from the factory. If it will bother you to have a different color than when new, or if it will make you happy to have it the same color as when new, then by all means go that route!

Steve, how many do you think are still out there? Not old, rusty parts cars like my 2 but solid, good cars that are complete & either runable or could be made runable easily.

I don't have any numbers, but there are several in the LA area and I see them on eBay all the time. There are probably more rusting than driving though! They were also exported all over the world so who knows how many there are remaining.

I'd go blue on the coupe Tony, OEW, red and green aren't nearly as rare

Well, there were 6,272 1500 coupes made (I've got 3, 2 will never see the road again & at least 1 of them will get crushed)...but only 841 were made in 1959.

There were 2,771 1600 coupes, 12 De Luxe coupes, & 23 Mk II De Lux coupes.

So, that's 6,272 + 2,771 + 12 + 23 = 9,078 produced between 1956 & 1962.

....& how many of the 9,078 were Mineral Blue? (As apparently it was only a color used on 1500 coupes, "how many of the 6,272 1500 coupes were Mneral Blue"?)

....& how many of those Mineral Blue's are still running around?

...& what determines 'rare'?

To me, rare means a car I want but can't find for sale. I'm sure there are very few mineral blue MGA Coupes driving around. There was one for sale for several years in Canada, finally disappearing from the classifieds last year. That's the only one I can remember in recent history. However I don't consider any car more or less "rare" because of the color it's painted. It makes it more unusual, but since paint is a perishable and replaceable item, and can be applied to any car in any color, I don't see it playing any part in a vehicle's rarity.

That's just my personal views of course, and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would say otherwise. The point is, this is your car and whatever makes you enjoy it the most is what you should do!

go with the blue. that picture of the blue interior had me staring in awe of how nice it will look. Oh, and I agree with what steve said. It's not going to be the original paint itself anyway, so pick what you like.

The only reason I can see to going with the VIN color on any restoration is if your going to try to win a concourse show, but then you've got to also recreate factory waxpen markings, and other trivial (IMO) stuff. Pick a color you like, and then build the car and drive it.

I would vote mineral blue is a great colour for a coupe but since I have a 59 mineral blue coupe I suppose I am bias. Bob

I think, go with what's on the VIN. Can't go wrong and it will be worth just a bit more.
