MG vs. Triumph Rivalry?

Is there still a rivalry between MG and TR owners or aren't we all simply LBC owners? :confuse:

I was driving home from work in my TR4A and an MGA was driving towards me in the opposite direction. I waved (I know he saw me) but got no response. British cars are really becoming few and far between even in the DC area. What gives?

I always enjoy ribbing MG owners, but occasionally I find one who really takes the rivalry seriously. It blows my mind...

On the roads though, I always wave at MGs and have pretty much always got a wave back.

I think there is a friendly rivalry still here in the UK, but I have to admit that it is still difficult to get a wave out of an MG driver! Probably because they are having to use both hands to keep it in gear and stop it pulling over to the wrong side of the road!! Or maybe they are contemplating how the roof comes down!

It doesn't stop at Triumph-MG. I've had the snob bit thrown at me by Austin Healey and Jag owners. But I don't let the few stand outs bother me.

Hey!
Snob Jag owners?

Mini drivers are the WORST!

Remember, those who think their poop doesn't stink have a serious blockage in the nasal passages......probably caused by BLOWBY!

Here in Minnesota we don't wave much at all. Garrison Keillor once wrote a long florid description of two guys passing each other on the road (in their pickups, of course) each lifting one finger off the wheel. This constitutes a proper Minnesota "wave."

That said, I get thousands of waves, thumbs-ups, hoots, cat-calls, etc. driving my TR3 -- and I don't think I've been spurned by any other LBC drivers at whom I have waved. Though, I do have to dig back several weeks in memory to remember the last one. It was a MGTx (I can't tell the Cs from the Ds from the Fs very well) and he did wave.

Aloha,

I don't have rivalry problem since I own one of each. Our local club is multi-marque so I really haven't noticed a problem there either. Perhaps it is like behaving with your siblings, you can rib and pick on each other but rally together if an outside starts it. For example, as a British car owner I feel I can poke fun at Lucas but don't think a Ford owner has a right to do so.

Being I also drive motorcycles this is always a conversation that comes up with bikes.

But that said I never have an issue with someone waving when I am in my Spitfire, GT6 or Herald. I never have to wave at another British car because I never see one in my area.

What I have to live with is people waving, honking or yelling something to me when I drive my Herald down the highway. I just can't believe how friendly people are when I drive it. They are always passing me giving me the Minnesota 1 finger wave, yelling something I just can't seem to hear or honking and pointing at me. Minnesota drivers are just so friendly. I just wish I could understand what they were saying.

Here in Madison, WI the MG Group officially changed to The Madison British Car Group a few years ago. We have a great time together.

Shirley and I also belong to The Road Apples and are the only foreign car in the club.

June 26th The Road Apples are putting on our annual car show. Being president of the MBCG I thought it would be fun if both clubs could work together on the show.
I proposed it to the MBCG first and they liked the idea. Then I approached the RA and they liked the idea also. So we are all busy getting ready for the show.

The way I look at it is we are all enjoying old cars, why not enjoy all kinds?

I have a Mini, a Riley Elf, a Triumph Herald and an MGB.
I'll wave at anybody. I get the most responses when I am in the Mini or the Elf.
I don't think very many MINI drivers have any idea of the connection (or lack thereof) between a Mini and a MINI (BINI). Same goes for newer (1980s and up) Jag drivers. I also have a Ford Falcon Ranchero, and I don't think the electrical system is any better than a clean, maintained lucas system.

TOC....forgot to mention that I have a Healey, so I guess I'll be snubbing myself when I get it on the road one day.
I understand the ones to watch out for are Hillman owners!
I like all of the cars.

We seem to have gotten past that up here in the cold north. Most of the clubs are "British" car clubs and accept anything with an acceptable heritage certificate

If you want to see religious rebellions on brands, go check out the Nikon vs Canon DSLR camera forums....geez.... I own both system so I play moderator.

When I see an LBC (MG, Triumph, whatever...) in the Metro DC area, I usually don't get a wave back. It is annoying, but I figure those are the same folks that won't talk to me at the shows. I chalked it up to some sort of snobbery found in the area.

When I am driving outside of the area in the countryside between DC and Gettysburg where it is more laid back, I get lots of waves from all kinds of old cars, except for muscle cars, even farmers in the fields with their Farmalls. The MG guys are always first to wave and will stop at the gas station, roadside store, etc., to say hello and ask me how I like my Triumph. Those guys are nice to see at the shows.

'Fer cryin' out loud!! Now we all gotta play nice in the sandbox!! I guess it's time for a group hug also!!! :grouphug:

Not me, I'd rather push a Triumph then drive an MG!!

Just kidding guys. So don't get on my case...

I get that "1 gun" salute all the time.

I can only imagine why....

Ha!

I wrote Mini, not MINI.

I can't tell you how many times I come across a Mini, some RHD, even, whilst driving a freaking RHD MK2 Jaguar, no less, wave and flash the lights, they just drive on past.

You want finger waves.......Lopez Island, out in the San Juans in upper Puget Sound.

One Finger up off the wheel on the north end of the island, two fingers on the south end.
And, they do it to everybody.
