Jack Laird pointed out that on page 59 of "The Original Sprite & Midget" there's a photo of the engine compartment of an AH MkII/ Midget MkI engine & the heat shield is painted engine color.

Now, the valve cover says "AUSTIN" & that's a photo of a 948 engine & mine is the later MkI with a 1098 engine....but, page 81 also shows a painted heat shield on an "AUSTIN" engine....

Anybody got an original MkI Midget with a painted heat shield?

A friend of mine up here has a concurs '65 Midget. This guy is OVERLY meticulas and even contacted Terry Horler to help him with the detail. His heat shield is engine color.

Dear Tony,

Another bit of info. That darn heat sheild is tough to get paint to stick to. Sand blast it and prep properly.

Jack

Okay! Tomorrow I sandblast a brand new heat shield & put high heat primer on it before painting it engine color!

There ya go Tony. I will do mine the same way when I pull the engine this fall.

The concours guy's Originality Guide says that the carburetor heat shield was painted the same color as the engine on all models.

There ya go. The final answer.

Thanks Ray.

Ray - is that guide for MG's as well as Spridgets?

I thought that some of the later 1275's were black.

Same as engine color, if you engine is supose to be orange or black then the heat sheild is the same.

What if my engine has cow spots on it

that would be a different kind of hybrid - Oh, not THOSE cow spots

Tony

The guide is published by the Austin Healey Concours Registry and applies to Sprites.

That's what I thought...& there are differences between Sprites & Midgets that go beyond the marque differences...some of them are how the Midget was assembled differently than the Sprite (some things on the Sprite were painted but the same thing on the Midget wasn't - for example).
