Mercedes?

So is it yours? Inquiring minds want to know.

Nope - my spies found out a few negatives about the car ... and its history.

It's definitely a survivor, and has some positive aspects. But it's not *the* one.

OH, my WORD, Peter - that one is lovely! Black with red, too.

It is really nice, isn't it? I wonder what it can be had for?

Don't ask that question, it's irrevalent.

Ask: How much are you willing to pay for it? Then, bid that amount & see what happens...you mght get it for less, it might go higher.

I've been watching that one Peter posted. Really nice sedan. If I were a collector and had the bucks I'd have gone higher in my bidding. But note the "reserve not met" at $7600.

That car was on ebay a couple months ago, opening price $10K. One thing that pops out often is that there are guys who have some really nice cars, and who "advertise" them for sale with very high reserves. If they hang on long enough there's sure to be someone who will find "the perfect car" - and pay that high price. A car is worth what you're willing to pay for it.

I totally agree with Tony: set your max price, and don't get sucked into the maelstrom of bidding wars because "you have to have it!".

I've been watching sales on 220s for nearly a year. It's easy to get drawn in, like the three guys in O Brother Where Art Thou. Walking through the woods, hearing those beautiful women singing at the river, and ... well, you know what happens!

Boy, I can see how easy it would to get into trouble at Halloween time if I owned that car.....

John-Peter - thanks for the link.

To me it's amusing the way the seller describes himself: " ... as a busy lawyer I don't have time to go back and forth over a few dollars ..." - yet the pictures are unbelievably grainy and show the car in what looks like a junk or salvage yard. And why he paid $6000 for it "on ebay last year" is beyond me. A 1967 200D (diesel) would have to be in nearly perfect condition to be worth that much.

Onward through the fog!

Tom,

Those cars are "Really Cool",but Kudos to you
for not getting sucked in to buying them.
I have a soft spot for these cars,but wouldn't
buy one until the "right one" comes along.
As Jim Bronson ("Then Came Bronson" - "Well -
hang in there").
And please get ahold of me if you make it out
this way.

Update ...

As of yesterday I became the guardian of a 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S four door sedan. Should be delivered on Thursday or Friday. Altho' not the same model as I learned to drive on, it's the same model that my dad used to drive back in the 1960s.

So the trip I referred to in my first post in this thread is ON. (Car needs a few tweaks and some TLC of course ...). Famous last words.

The pictures some of you have already seen:

Lots of TLC needed, but relatively strong in body, frame, engine and Hydrak transmission. It's gonna be a *busy winter and spring*.

Onward through the fog.

Oh, Tom!!!

If ya manage to get this far south, consider me casa su casa!!!

...and any resources you may need to be at your disposal.

I won't believe that the car really exists until you
pull up in front of the house. The same offer as Doc made
holds true here.

Glad you found one!

If you're through Utah on your travels, you have a place here as well.

Tom;
There is also a place in southern Ontario to hang out.
We're halfway betwixt Buffalo and Detroit on a main highway.

Hey guys - thanks for all the invitations. You just never know when an old Mercedes may pull up (or be towed up?) in front of your house.

Get those tool boxes ready!
