Oh, good grief! I knew things were not going well when “Woodstock” the ’79 B idled like a lawnmower in my garage this morning. Having just gone through issues, which turned out to be the alternator, I got that queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach again. I drove him cautiously around the block then put him back in the garage again and stuck a multitester on the battery. Things looked okay, so we went for a 5 or 6-mile gentle drive, and all the while I’m just waiting, waiting. Still idling rough…
I felt confident enough to go to NTB Tires and purchase the 175-65-14s I decided on (thanks for all the advice on that). As I get back in Woodstock to go straight home with the newly adorned tires, he won’t start. Not a battery sound, mind you…and then I thought…”The spark plugs are fouled”. I need to get the carburetor adjusted because it’s too rich but I need the tires in order to feel confident driving there to get it worked on…the old tires were purchased in 1987! The guy at NTB is nice enough and changes them for me, but then again I had my own spark plugs, gapper, and spark plug wrench in the car. I am prepared. He tries to close the hood and nearly crunches things before asking, “Do you know how to close the hood?” Hello!…duh!!! I paid attention the first time as to the how the thing works and I’m not a paid mechanic! By the way, I'm not a stupid woman either...the car runs fine with the new plugs.
I came home and tried to open the trunk to see what they did about the spare…they broke my trunk lid when they were checking the spare!!!!!! I mean…they broke the trunk lid!!! The mechanic pushed so hard that the trunk lid prop partly came though the top of the lid itself and I mean the trunk lid is BENT. I’m attaching a pic so you can grieve with me over this one. It wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t worked for five days last week with the polishing compound, a coat of cleaner/wax and a final coat of Meguiar’s Gold Class Wax. I just got the car really running two weeks ago and was so proud and now…grrrrrr! I know how Jaybird feels after her incident with the “lady”!
Next purchase from Moss Motors is a gas strut for the trunk and hood! I have to go by the tire place tomorrow and talk with the manager and show him the damage. I know they’ll take care of it but it’s the principle of the thing. I guess it’s a good thing that my spark plug issue came up and the guy from NTB saw firsthand how the hood prop works…too bad the mechanic who tried to close the trunk didn’t have a clue!
Thanks for letting me rave on so much…
