Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a word!!!

Oh, good grief! I knew things were not going well when “Woodstock” the ’79 B idled like a lawnmower in my garage this morning. Having just gone through issues, which turned out to be the alternator, I got that queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach again. I drove him cautiously around the block then put him back in the garage again and stuck a multitester on the battery. Things looked okay, so we went for a 5 or 6-mile gentle drive, and all the while I’m just waiting, waiting. Still idling rough…

I felt confident enough to go to NTB Tires and purchase the 175-65-14s I decided on (thanks for all the advice on that). As I get back in Woodstock to go straight home with the newly adorned tires, he won’t start. Not a battery sound, mind you…and then I thought…”The spark plugs are fouled”. I need to get the carburetor adjusted because it’s too rich but I need the tires in order to feel confident driving there to get it worked on…the old tires were purchased in 1987! The guy at NTB is nice enough and changes them for me, but then again I had my own spark plugs, gapper, and spark plug wrench in the car. I am prepared. He tries to close the hood and nearly crunches things before asking, “Do you know how to close the hood?” Hello!…duh!!! I paid attention the first time as to the how the thing works and I’m not a paid mechanic! By the way, I'm not a stupid woman either...the car runs fine with the new plugs.

I came home and tried to open the trunk to see what they did about the spare…they broke my trunk lid when they were checking the spare!!!!!! I mean…they broke the trunk lid!!! The mechanic pushed so hard that the trunk lid prop partly came though the top of the lid itself and I mean the trunk lid is BENT. I’m attaching a pic so you can grieve with me over this one. It wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t worked for five days last week with the polishing compound, a coat of cleaner/wax and a final coat of Meguiar’s Gold Class Wax. I just got the car really running two weeks ago and was so proud and now…grrrrrr! I know how Jaybird feels after her incident with the “lady”!

Next purchase from Moss Motors is a gas strut for the trunk and hood! I have to go by the tire place tomorrow and talk with the manager and show him the damage. I know they’ll take care of it but it’s the principle of the thing. I guess it’s a good thing that my spark plug issue came up and the guy from NTB saw firsthand how the hood prop works…too bad the mechanic who tried to close the trunk didn’t have a clue!

Thanks for letting me rave on so much…

*UGH* TN! I cannot imagine how you must feel. I would be LIVID and I would have been back at NTB in the time it took to turn around and drive there. And I probably would have had some 18 year old by the scruff of his neck! Makes me sick just thinking about it. And when I saw the pics...

Get back to NTB FIRST thing in the morning. I sure wish you'd have noticed it while you were still there. But I'm sure they'll make good.

You have wires on your B? I'm probably checking NTB for the same size tire this coming week, but I'm concerned about some kid not having a clue about them when they replace the tires. What tires did you end up with?

I'm soooooo sorry about your B's booboo.

Thanks for the sympathy...AGHHHH!!!! Had it not been rush hour I would have gone back to deal with the kid who clearly was not born when my car was made. They need to realize that not all cars are made like a Honda or Ford, and if they don't know how something works, for Pete's sake, just ASK!

Whew! Back to your question. I got the Goodyear Ultra Tour LS in 175-65-14. It drove like a tractor because they put about 35 pounds all the way around and it shook my fillings all the way home. They had a deal with those tires that the alignment is free...HA! And then there's the trunk...that had better be free!

By the way, Jaybird, I do not have wires...wish I did...they look great!

Sorry for you..

I replaced mine with gas struts from Moss with a left and right strut for the hood and trunk.

I attached a picture

The biggest difference is for the hood it now opens close to 90 degrees.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Not that it helps, but that kind of damage isn't unusual (unfortunately). I've seen dozens of Bs with wrinkled, bent, and otherwise damaged trunks because people figured "since it's not closing I just have to push really hard - right?"

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

OUCH! Very sorry to see that happen. Hopefully they will make good.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

I hate when mechanics do stupid stuff like that...and are not even aware of it, but my peave is(now listen up you guys)...

IMPACT WRENCHES ARE FOR LOSSENING!!! USE A TORQUE WRENCH TO TIGHTEN!

Thanks, I feel much better now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

OUCH! But like Scott said, I too have unfortunatley seen that before too! I hope they make it right.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Now I'm not feeling so anal. When I decided on new tires last year, I put the car up on jack stands, pulled all four wheels off, then took them to the tire center in my truck.

I let other people have access to my baby as little as possible. Even if it's real inconvenient to me. It seems easier then jail time.

I hope you get some satisfaction with your problem.
Good luck!

Okay, so I went to NTB this morning bright and early. The manager was not as friendly nor as concerned as he should have been...big surpise, huh? They said they didn't see how this could happen by trying to force the trunk lid shut. I had to pull out a photo from last week when I was so excited about the great job I did on the polishing out the oxidation and final waxing. The picture clearly shows no huge dent in the trunk lid! He said his insurance company would call me the first of next week about this.
AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Sigh...

Jeez, I thought I was the only one who did that. Over the years 4 sets of tires for the TRs and they have never seen the cars.

Once when I got home with the 4 mounted tires I found that 2 had both the old weights and the new weights on there, 1 had the weight fall off on the ride home and the last had the bottom end of the old valve rattling around inside it. Goodness knows what they would have done if they'd had the whole car to work with.

Let us know the outcome, esp if they are reluctant to make it right.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

TN,

It does suck what happened to you, but when I do have to take my car to someplace to get help with tires, alignment or inspection, whatever... usually, I make a point of standing out in the garage (as much as insurance will allow) and watching the guy work on my car. I don't try to be a John Thomas about it, but usually the guys are into cars and they know you are too and appreciate your car. Usually they have a car too they enjoy, be it a chevy or honda. But I make a point of being nice as possible and talk car talk. I've often found my car gets extra special attention or extra service because they know I love and appreciate cars and what they do.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Oh dear! Sorry to hear about that. I learned from my dad at an early age not to take your collector car to chains like that after he specifically told them not to use the impact wrench on his '47 Lincoln and they did anyway. After 4 distorted rims and a toungue lashing he swore never to let anyone touch his car unless he was standing right next to it. Hope things work out for you! I guess the manager doesn't have an understanding of how forces applied to sheet metal the wrong way can bend or puncture it.

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Well, I called NTB's corporate office yesterday. The woman I spoke with let me rant and was horrified by my story, as she should have been. I told her about them flatly denying that this damage could have happened in their shop and the second class citizen treatment I received because I am a woman. It was interesting that she asked me prior to that if I was alone when I dealt with these guys...makes me wonder if they've have complaints like this before. Of course, she might have wanted to know if I had any witnesses to this incident. She said upper management would be notified and I would hear back from them on this matter. She also said she would see to it that my comments on the way I was treated would be going to management and not to the store where this happened so that I won't have to deal with those jerks again. Of course, I won't let up on this and I want my TRUNK FIXED!!!!!!
I'll keep you guys posted on what happenes next...

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Ah ha! The saga continues...
Got a call from the store manager who was so rude last Saturday...he couldn't have been nicer. Said he called the insurance company on Monday and they talked to him today saying they will contact me soon.
Do ya think the two calls I made to the corporate office of NTB might have made a difference??? Hmmmmm....

One point for the good guys! Er... girls! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Ahhh... the issue is now resolved!!! I got a check from NTB's insurance company for $1300 for the damage they did to the trunk. The car needs a new paint job so I will just have it all taken care of at the same time.
WHEW!!! I will order the gas lifts for the trunk as well as the hood when I place my next order from Moss.
HOORAY!!!

Re: Mechanic broke my trunk...and never said a wor

Great news!

If you want a referral for a place to have it painted, shoot me an e-mail - richaudtr3@yahoo.com.

They're not in Nashville, but not too far away, and worth the trip.
