Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

lol I don't think painting the engine would make any difference on my car. Especially considering how it's like a reverse "Twinkie" when you pop the bonnet... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Glad to hear that Darrin is working your problem out.

got the car... had an adventure getting home though... We stopped off at a Wendy's for lunch, and I had the throttle cable snap in the parking lot. So, we all went in to grab a bite to eat, and when we came back out the car was fixed... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Seriously though, Darrin replaced the throttle cable during the clutch job (the old one looked like it could have been an original part). The part failed ... it seems it was a Far East Moss sourced part. Darrin had the cable replaced before I even sat down to eat my food. He's a great guy! He gets two roaring /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif from me! I'll definitely be going back to him for other things I don't have the facilities to do myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have an on-board spare at all times. Bike brake cable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't we all, Doc? That was a tip I got at a very tender age.

So, all is well. You are up and running?

And what is the next project.

next project? hoping and praying that I don't have to do a smog test this year and recooperate from the repair bill. While the repair bill itself wasn't bad... the towing added onto it made the total cost higher than what I purchased the car for. However, that's ok IMO. The car is already worth more than what I purchased it for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And a new car would have cost far more in payments than you've put into this one, including fuel! I don't mind the occasional couple hundred bucks I have to put into my "old car". It beats several hundred per month PLUS maintenance and 5x the insurance.

exactly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif sick of being and dept... prefer to own the car myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, let's see here. Yesturday's shake down was surface streets (stop and go traffic) and freeway (long straight high speed) driving. The drive on those were non-eventful not counting pre-existing vehicular conditions. The B got up to about 80 or maybe 85 MPH without any drama. She had more legs to go faster, but I figured 4500 - 5000RPMs was plenty fast. So, all is well for daily driving stuff.

I got a bit restless today, though. I took the B out for a drive on a route that I'd laid out a while back but never got up the gumption to do. So, today's shake-down started in La Cañada, CA on the Angeles Crest Highway (US 2). I took a left onto the Angeles Forest Highway, another left onto Big Tujunga Canyon Road, past Tujunga Reservoir, and back into town. ( Click here to see the route on Yahoo! Maps Beta )

I must say, the shake down went _very_ well. I still have a huge honkin' grin on me face /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think that has to have been the most fun on 4 wheels I've had to date. It was some of the curviest, turniest, and twistiest road I've driven so far. I only dropped into 2nd gear twice, and both times was to make the left turns onto the joining "Highway". There was a section of about 100yrds of Big Tujunga Canyon Road that was really bad and it felt like I'd gone off-roading in the B. Other than that, the rest of the road surface was well maintained and provided the B with a surface to maximize traction on. Up hill passing was a bit of a chore though, thanks to the asthmatic breathing of my B. However, I was fortunate enough to have been stuck behind slow moving traffic only twice. I saw plenty of 'sport bikes' riding the route, but they were all heading the other direction. So, I didn't have to worry about getting in their way or them being in my way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I think I pushed the car pretty hard (average speed was around 50 - 60MPH). I think the B has limits a bit higher than what I pushed at, but I didn't care to try and find them today. I did manage to make the tires talk to me in a couple of turns, but I think that was because I just touched the dividing line paint. I never lost traction in any of the turns, but I did hit a wet spot in the road that sent me towards the outside of the turn a foot or two before the tires regained traction and put me back on the line. That was a bit of an eye opener /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif I recall a couple of 3rd gear hair-pins that had me shouting with glee as I rounded them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can't wait til drive on Monday now... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Woohoo! As soon as you said Angeles Crest, I got a big grin. I have an even better loop for your next drive.

How was the new clutch?

Very curvy looking roads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Last time I slid on a sharp corner I screamed in horror instead of shouting with glee. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The clutch worked flawlessly! It still feels a bit odd to me, but that may be because I'd been driving with a failling clutch for so long that I don't know how a good one is supposed to feel in a B. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Now keep your foot off of it when the car is in gear.

and while sitting around at stop lights too... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif I'm definitely more conscious of me foot to clutch pedal relation. I've never driven while "riding" the clutch. My bad habit was holding the clutch down while waiting for the light to change... which is a no no with these carbon faced throw-out bearings /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

How can angels crest not bring a smile to ones face. Next time you go up there continue right on 2 to upper big Tujunga then back down on angels forest hwy. Lots of fun tight turns further up on 2. Watch out on the weekends as the chp does aggressively patrol up there.

Ha, when stoped and engine running, clutch out. Those little carbon bearings will last forever and then some.

Needless to say, after this evolution of repair, you will truly become the expert. Others see the problem, but we in our quest for the fix, find joy. Whenever I see a lbc on the road, I find a kinship of heart with the owner.

that little drive with Steve_S today in Malibu was a hoot! there was quite a bit of traffic including cyclers to contend with today though. I got to see some really nice cars, including a brand spanking new Lotus Exige /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My B did pretty good on the drive. I still have some wierd condition with the car where it wants to act lean after prolonged driving. The B stalled at a couple of the stops we made to let everyone catch up.

The engine got *really* hot on the way home. It was all up hill at freeway speeds 70-80MPH. I've never seen the temp guage climb that high before. It got to within 2 needle widths of the final tick mark next to "H".
