Matching Numbers Question

Just a thought. If there was a replacement engine at some time in the past 40 50 years is it worth checking the gearbox number, as the drivetrain may have been replaced as a unit. Mine, 16332, is in accord with the BMIHT certificate, but the engine number is missing (rivets in place). I know it has been rebuilt in the past, or maybe even changed.

Well, tonyk, it's true that with a gearbox number one can (sometimes) determine from BMIHT which chassis and engine belonged to that gearbox. I say "sometimes" because the gearbox number is not always recorded in the BMIHT manufacturing records. Even if it is, determining the original engine number from the matching gearbox number doesn't guarantee the identity of the engine in the car if it's missing it's serial plate. It may have been replaced with the gearbox, or not, but there is just no way to identify that engine now -- or ever.

If your gearbox is 16332 and is original to your car, I can tell you have a rather late BJ8. I have a record of gearbox 16331, 16335, 16336, 16338 (two different cars, actually), and 16339. I do not have yours recorded, so assume I also do not have your car in the registry. Could you contact me, please at sbyers@ec.rr.com?

Thanks!

This is the right side of my transmission but I don't see any stamped numbers.

My gearbox number is supposed to be 3567 but not sure how I can verify that if the number plate is also missing on the housing as it is on the engine! Maybe when I next have it up on a lift I'll be able to see the number...

See the projection ("boss") on the passenger's side of the gearbox case, in the middle of the "waffle"? The serial number is stamped into the metal of the boss, not on a plate that is likely to be lost/destroyed.

The only pic I have is too low-res to blow up enough to read the numbers on the boss. Guess it'll wait till I have her up on a lift in a few months.
