Long story. A friend had a really, really nice '64 Pontiac GTO convertible back in the early 80s that he had pumped a bunch of money into and was deservingly quite proud of. Only took it out for occasional Sunday runs and a rare car show. I actually drove it once, the first (and last) time he showed it to me. (I kinda convinced him to let me pilot it around the block, showed him how to power shift, scared the bujeezus out of him.)
Making a short story long, as chance would have it, my friend went bankrupt in '87 (yes, even an Endodontist can do it, over-extended when the South Louisiana oil industry went flat) and rather than see the courts take his precious Goat, he sold it to "someone" for a dollar then resold it for market price after the dust settled. The car ended up, strangely, in a garage in my little burg, stored away. The new owner is an overpaid oil exec that works in Africa and he keeps it in his papa's garage, again in my home town. Chance. I have known this for a number of years, have heard stories about how the young oil man has sunk a fortune into it to have it re-restored (hey, it was nice when I saw it, and I know it never slept outdoors or was driven). Well yesterday I finally decided to go check it out as it was resting under a carport across town, waiting for its new seats. Yeach! $35,000.00 of re-restoring and it is at best, a great barn find! Go figure. Makes you wonder.
Heck, my TR6 is in better shape.
I should'a given ya'll the Reader's Digest version of this story. Ya had to be there.
