According to the newspaper today, the Super Bowl edged out the MASH finale as the most-watched TV event in American history by 500,000 viewers. In 1983, approximately 106,000,000 Americans watched the final episode of MASH, while this past weekend, 106,500,000 Americans watched the Saints beat Colts.
However, since I'm bored, I decided to calculate the percentage of the overall U.S. population that watched each show. In 1983, the U.S. population was almost 234,000,000. With 106,000,000 viewers, that means that 45% of the country watched the MASH finale. Today, there are roughly 309,000,000 Americans. This means that with 106,500,000 viewers, roughly 35% of the country watched the big game.
So, by my math, MASH remains supreme!
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
