TR4/4A Looking at a TR4 tomorrow. --Up-dated with pics!!

Re: Looking at a TR4 tomorrow. Thoughts on price?

I have always loved the TR4 (I don't know why). But, I'm beginning to think I might be better off buying one already restored.
The TR4 is a great little car, it was the first car I bought way back then. There is probably more to restoring this car then meets the eye. So if you are already having doubts about putting the time and money into it to do it right, I would say follow that feeling and get one that is already done.

Still really hard to say, in my opinion - drivers floorboard looks patched. If you think the sills and floorboards are good, then yes that price sounds good.

I agree with glemon;

Relative to the rust: Check out "ALL" the areas that have primer on them with a magnet or something. The most notorious area for rusting is where the top of the fenders meet the body. If this is the case of rust in those areas your looking at big $$$.

I would also certainly make sure the engine at least turns over by hand. As someone here mentioned; If I had an engine rebuilt; There surely would have been some "Cleaning" or at least minimal detail work! I`d be suspicious.

When your "Hesitating"; Don`t do it unless you can get it for about $1500.00.

Having owned several 4s; Just my opinion.

Happy Hunting,

Russ

I agree with those who say it isn't all that bad.

I also agree that you should look for metal vs. bondo, and hand turn that crank by grabbing the fan while it's in neutral.

I'd also want my "body man" handy, unless that's you.

Mechanically, the 4 can be a blast to work on and renew and revive, but for aesthetics, you can spend money on parts and labor, and you may need several thousand dollars to get the car looking even close to what you want.

But those pics don't look all that bad.

Check the steering bracket under the dash. Is it rusted?

Any rust on the frame other than surface rust?

Are the seats in need of total replacement? What about the door panels?

Front fenders alone could be another $1500 just to find good used ones.

Is the battery platform rusted or corroded?

Is the wiring harness shot?

Good luck.

It appears to be a decent car. I would hate to pay $2500 for it uless it would start though. One man's rebuild is another man's tune up.

I see its not too too far from me. Let me know if you pass. I may be interested. I need to get back to the real TRs.

Good luck with the TR4. I have one and I love it. You said that the dash as bad. I have a few nice wood ones. One is nice and solid. may need veneering or just sanding but it is in good shape. You can have it if you like.
