Great Pumpkin - R.I.P

Hit the road at 5:30 this morning driving to Prospect, KY, just north of Louisville...barely got home in time to unload before the sun went down....here are photos of it coming out of its carriage house nest for the first time in 12 years!

Now, I've got to develop an "Awakening a Sleeping Daimler Checklist"! Its a 1961 model, straight shift transmission with that beautiful Hemi V8 engine....when I opened the trunk, you could smell lacquer....but I've all the records on the car...before his death, the PO (medical doctor) had it completely restored (in the photos of that time, its beautiful)...everything still is except the paint which has been banged on, leaned against, hit with lawnmowers, etc over the years....interior is beautiful & new, top is new, windshield & weatherstriipping is new, tires are new Pirelli 155SR15's that are dryrotted (spare wheel's not had a tire on it since repaint!)...I was worried about rust in the frame - beautiful shiny new (12 years ago) black paint....a good cleaning, go through the hydraulics & fuel system, new paint & tires & she's a $30,000 car!

Can you say,"HEMI!"

Right on! Great find, Tony. I think you'll be surprised on how easy it is to get that back on the road.

And since it's fiberglass, a repaint wouldn't be expensive (if it was just banged into in a garage) because there won't be a ton of work necessary to remove dents.

Can't wait for you to tell us "she's a runner!"

Congrats, Tony. You done good, yet again. That does have to be the coolest ugly car around. And a V8 to boot. Nice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I've always wanted to hate those cars but I just can't. They're so ugly that they're beautiful! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif But then again, I grew up raising and caring for English Bulldogs. Still have a weak spot for them too.

Looks like it was made in someones back shop without their glasses. Strange to say the very least.

Tony:

Great find, I am leaning a bit on getting, if I could find it.

Patrick

Tony, a really rare and wonderful find. And, you're just the guy to make the car like new again.

How many of those were made? It's got be be very, very rare.

Cool, fast car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

That is really, really neat. Congrats!

There is one that tools around in my area, but I'm always "on the go" when I see it, so I can't make a connection with the owner. I am guessing I'll see one tommorrow (at the Moss Motors show...there's often one in attendance).

2,648 were made between 1959 & mid-1964.

NICE! One of the local collectors had a pair of those. a BRG one for the street and a red and yellow one for the track. The track car has a mercedes 300SL grill grafted into the front (he also owned a Gullwing) It looked really cool. I liked it better than the original grille.
Of course he got in some trouble with the SVRA when they found out he was running the 3.5l Hemi out of a Daimler Saloon instead of the original 2.5.
As he told me, the only visual difference between the two externally is an extra 1" deck height on the block. hehehehehe.
Have fun Tony

My info is showing 2650 were made. Tony I am so jealous.

Hmmmm....wonder what the 2 car discrepancy is?

someone rounding off a figure?
or those were the 2 ultra-secret, super-rare, factory test mules used in the 1960 Mille Miglia to prove the viability of Bass ale as a race fuel.....
THey broke down in the first leg, but the drivers and navigators diden't care... They even refused the tow for 2 days until they ran out of bee..-er-I mean fuel.

There's one on ebay that's not as nice as mine - bid is $7,500 & reserve is not made!

Guy was here today to pick up a large Moss order...asked me how much it would take for me to part with it....I told him nothing less than $15,000 would even be in the ballpark - & that might be too low once I've leaned it & fired the engine!
