Personally I would change over to the points – keep it simple, that’s my motto.

Regarding the points or no points question. I have had great luck with points. In my TR3 I have been driving it since 1985. I can't say the points have never let me down, but they have never left me starnded at the side of the road. The points are so simple you can always fix/adjust or replece them at the side of the road.

I say go for the points and drive it. Also make sure you condenser is good. The high temp failure you are talking about could be the condenser shorting with temperature.

I second the points, I use the MSD6 unit with them and they last 10K miles and still look new, no pits. I change them because the springs weaken. With the MSD6 you can lose the condenser too.
Although the MSD unit is a bit big it fits neatly in the TR3 glovebox with more than enough room for other items.

with the Spits, I've found that the rub block, (on the four lobed cam) will wear even with lube. I've had more problem with that than the points burning. You can always get home anyway by just opening them a bit. Got so I didn't even need a feeler guage. Just eyeball um.

Not a VTVM (vacuum tube voltmeter), just an old Simpson 260. Very accurate and sensitive for a D'arsonval type movement; but still only 20Kohms/volt rather than the 10 Megohms or more for a VTVM. Pretty rugged too, except when you knock it off onto a concrete floor.

Nope,

DPO Pedro had the cover held on with chewing gum.
Ben kindly showed me what was missing so I could
order parts and install the vent cover that blew off.
I have the cover.

I still have a few Pedro-ized bits to deal with.
I'm making a shopping list for Tony so I can get
just one outrageous shipping cost instead of many
small ones.
