Little Midget Up-date & Question

Little Midget Update & Question

So, I spent the morning retrofitting my little '63 Midget for dual OE horns...it originally came with only 1 horn as the 2nd was an option; however, over the years the old horn got exchanged for an aftermarket one....so, I've collected up a set of OE horns & a set of OE British Heritage brackets & they are now installed in front of the radiator in the little depression in the front panel assembly behind the front apron...all I have to do is make the horn-to-horn wiring harness as I've not been able to find one.....apparently very few early Midgets had dual horns.

& I also worked this morning installing an oil cooler....I found a British Heritage oil cooler bracket, have drilled the holes for its bolts & it also is in the little depression in front of the radiator just like were it done in the factory.....the new oil cooler is installed also.

Now, here's the question: where do the hoses go through the front pannel assembly & the splash panel?

I'm gonna have to cut holes since my car never them cut. So, photos, measurements if possible would be helpful.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Do you think they are the same place on a '70?

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

I have no idea...remember, I have the 4" round fresh air tube going back to the heater coming down the passenger inner fender.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Right, in my splash apron (above that tube opening) there are two holes (fitted with rubber plugs). I need to go take a closer look.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

But... how the lines get to the center of the nose cone? I have no idea.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Tony, do you know any electricians? A greenly punch would make nice clean hole for grommets to fit in for the hoses to go through. All you do is drill a 3/8 hole and then fit the punch set through and it makes a beautiful clean hole. You live to far away for me to loan you mine.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Oh, I'm not worried about making the holes - just their placement & size.

Oh, those 2 holes up towards the top of the panel are where I routed wiring. Did I route them wrong?

One of these things

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

The wire on mine go through a hole/grommet closer to the fender (near where the fender attaches).

I need to get my camera out.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Tony,
Please post details of how you wired the two horns together. I plan to replace the single horn on my Bugeye with two horns and have not yet started to think about the wiring, so if you have figured it out that will save me from screwing it up.
Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie - I'm taking a piece of purple/black & a piece of purple wire out of an old harness, cutting them to length, sliding them inside a plastic sleeve, putting shielded spad connectors on them & connecting that harness from one horn to the other...doubt they're gonna be over a foot long.

Yep, that's them...& they're the holes up near the top of the splash panel which are too small for the oil hose grommets.

I'm almost thinking the oil hoses must go through beneath above the fresh air hose - dunno though...

They've gotta go through 2 panels.....

And in this VB diagram, there are 3 little unnumbered brackets that I don't have, if anybody has a couple of extras. One is up in the curve of #11, another is near #15, and the last one is near #20. I think they help support the hoses.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Moss has an oil cooler "installation kit" but I do not know what it contains.

The two holes at the top of my panel are definitely large enough for the lines to go through, but I do not know what the factory did for the panel to get the lines into the grill area.

Nope - nowhere near like OE...

Nope the grommets for the oil lines won't go in those two holes.
& it would be an awfully hard turn from the nearest cooler line connection to those holes.

Plus, if you use those holes for the oil cooler what do you use for the wiring harness?

Does anybody have a Midget with an oil cooler?

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

We must be talking about two different things. I'm almost 100% certain that holes in my splash panel are for oil cooler hoses. and I have additional holes for the wiring and an access hole for the radiator mounting bolt.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Sure would love to see photos, Trevor...all I have is 1 hole in the splash panel & 2 holes in the front panel - none big enough for the oil cooler hose grommets.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

One possibility here is that the original oil coolers had smaller hoses.

Re: Little Midget Update & Question

Tony,

On Bugsy my '68 there is a spot between the radiator upright and the shroud where the hoses run through. Originally the oil cooler was mounted down at the bottom of the valence sitting between the radiator uprights. For clips to roue hoses simple electrical conduit clips work great,. Just be careful what those hoses rub against when routing cooler lines.

With the BE Bonnet I did need to relocate the Oil Cooler higher up on the radiator supports to get clearance on the BE Bonnet.

HA!! That's it...I don't have those 2 holes!! At least now I have a starting point.

Got a photo from behind the radiator, Trevor? Or can you get to it to make one?

Now I've gotta go remove the splash panel & duplicate the hole location in Trevor's....

Hey, trev....can you remove one of those plugs & tell me the diameter of the hole?

Hallelujiah!! Half way there on this little job....
